Returning the Shogun for the 7Q+ for a7s

As noted previously, adding compression is a large processing task. It can also be detrimental to material if it already started as compressed and then went through a decompression phase once, as would be the case with the Sony FS RAW. Recompressing could lead to artifactwing, known as concatenation.

In that case, is there a reason not to store the already-compressed FS RAW stream?

Neither was there for the Magic Lantern RAW files: they made a simple PC app that unfolds it to standard DNG.

It means one more step in the workflow (though it can be done while moving the data to the computer), and I don't know how much smaller the FS RAW stream is than what you are recording onboard, so it may make no sense at all.

In any case, it would be most welcome in the market that doesn't offer FS RAW output to begin with: small cameras that would match better with smaller recorders.

I work for a few days every day with the shogun.
The quality of 4K from the A7s via shogun is amazing.
The handling of the shogun is easy and comfortable, the screen quality is very good.
The focus control of 4K is better than I thought.
And YES the lack of playback is annoying,
the absence of a stable and well fitting sun hood is annoying,
the strange behaviour of the powersupply is annoying: you can work with a N-PF970 almost one hour in peace, than starts the battery controll often from green to red, that should mean the voltage is running out, but after a few seconds its green again and ten minutes later the power is off. This is not really reliable. Ok, I have three of that N-PF970 and so I will come over the day, but the atomos guys should fix that.
You can calculate the memory requirements over again, but in the real life it was surprising me how fast a 1TB SSD is full in the 4K world. That was one of my main reasons against the Q7. I am not very experienced with 4K and I have to learn to work with more discipline but nevertheless: the files are really large and its nice to buy a 1TB SSD for 300 Euros.
I bought the shogun also, because they promised a RAW solution for the FS700. The camera is getting a future with this option. I am very excited, if they will keep their promises. If YES then they deserve a chance, if not...you can continue the shogun bashing
At least...it is nice to work with theshogun (so far).

For me, the FS700 offering they have with the Shogun is lackluster. Sure, it's free (instead of $795), but you're losing up to 4K RAW 60fps (and also, 4K RAW 120fps burst) as well as 2K RAW 240fps, and it's not looking likely that they'll be able to convert to ProRes in real-time from the FS RAW signal. That's a ton of functionality that the 7Q+ has that the Shogun doesn't. The Shogun has an "advantage" with media... I put that in quotes because it's a short-term monetary bonus that you're trading off reliability with. Hell, Shogun is passing off responsibility. They also get to turn around and say "well, your drive doesn't meet spec XYZ, so it's not our fault you lost your files." in the event that something goes bad with a third-party drive.

Long story short, I feel like the Shogun is asking for 75% of the cost of the 7Q+ (by the time you consider recorder+two 256GB SSDs+FS RAW codec) while offering drastically reduced functionality. If your *only* use is for 4K HDMI from a GH4 or A7s... I can understand a desire to save money with the Shogun but I think you'd be setting yourself up better with the 7Q+ in the long run. More options, more frame rates, more functionality that is compatible with a wider range of cameras.
