Return of the JVC

We have our replacement camera after returning the first two.

Initial signs look very good. The VF and picture are certainly much cleaner than the last two cameras with no sign of the magenta/red noise that has been the case in the last two cameras.

The split screen is still there but to a much lesser degree.

We'll put the camera on mains to get up to operating temp and check the degree of the split screen effect.

I'm convinced that our 2nd camera had a combination of dud lens and camera.
Brief tests yesterday showed CA more in line with what Nate Weaver has been shooting on his test footage to what we experienced with camera 2.

Can't do any detailed tests as our FCP rig is on hire.

I can't tell you any reasons for the faults we experienced as in each case the sales distributor replaced the camera with a new unit.

Edit: Forgot to add -we put a clip on matte box on the front of the lens. If you over tighten the clamp you effect the focus ring. Something you will need to be aware of if having a m/b on the front with filters. Could be a fine line between losing focus control or having you m/b and filters come off the front of your lens.

Having an Arri MB18 and FF3 sent up tonight for rig and photos.

Was the orignal camera the one that displayed the 'double image CA' of the swans?

Camera 1 Dead pixels, split screen, red noise
Camera 2 Split screen, red noise, CA even when lens swapped out with replacement (swan camera)

Camera 3 No split screen at 9db, very minor at 18db, no red noise, CA in line with Nate Weavers LA bus footage.

Any wide angle adapter for the camera will have to be a screw in type as pressure on the front of the lens barrel lip effects the focus ring.

Its looking good and 4 days booked next week.

Rocketeer, how do you compare it against the z1? I'm a bit disappointed with the PAL delay of the HVX, and am really in need of a HD solution for my upcoming short film.

Then you should rent! (but I would say that wouldn't I?)

Seriously, the HVX is such a quantum leap in what has ever been offered before that it would be worth waiting 6 months for a camera that could concievably last you a lifetime. Pity the design team came up with the 'brick with lens' look.

There is no point in comparing it against the Z1 as the differences are such that each individual has to make the call on whether the camera is right for their shoot.
