Resulting DVCPROHD files are 2/3 the size of their original MXF counterparts?

Hello,

I have a 16 gig P2 card and a 32 gig P2 card in my HVX200.

Recently I shot about 35 gigs of material (filled up the 16 gig card and shot another 20 or so on the 32 gig card). I imported all the footage using Log & Transfer, but when I do a "Get Info" on my Capture Scratch folder to see the size of the resulting DVCPROHD files, I find that they only total to 15 gigs. Those DVCPROHD .MOV files look great and sound great, but they are about 1/2 the size of their original MXF counterparts. I can confirm this by comparing the DVCPROHD file created on my hard drive to the original MXF file on the P2 card.

Is this normal? I checked the resolution of the DVCPROHD quicktime files and they are all 960x720 @ 60fps, like I shot on the camera. All the clips were imported successfully off the camera and they look great, but they are so much smaller than the original files! Please help!

Thx,
Conrad

I can't answer all of your questions, but I can confirm that when I checked my DVCPROHD quicktime .mov files, they were smaller than their MXF equivalents. Not by half, but that may have something to do with the length of the clips. A test of a 1080/24pA file was shown as 267 MB for .mov and 339 MB for MXF.

However, when checking some SD files, I found the .mov files to be smaller than the MXF. A DVCPRO50 file shot at 480 and 24p was 206 MB verse its' MXF file of 257 MB.

This may have something to do with the actual camera compression being different than the resulting file size when nested within the quicktime wrapper.....just a hunch...but I believe what you're seeing is probably normal.

Didyou remove pulldown or duplicate frames? only thing I can think of. actually never looked at this. if everything is ok, why worry?

Hi, Dick...
Not sure about the OP, but I know in my case I have always removed pulldown when shooting pA modes that require it. My files are different sizes. I just checked 720pN footage and found the .mov and MXF to be virtually the same size. One or two files were within .2MB of each other. Appears to be the same when shooting NATIVE modes, but not other modes....hmmmm.

It's the pulldown I believe. Anytime you shoot something non native it is recording that setting into a 60i wrapper then when you import Final Cut is removing frames hence smaller file size.
