SHORT: Resonance

Hello everyone,

After being abroad for two years, I had a reunion last month with film making friends from college. We came together and crafted a story and filmed it for a local monthly film festival (MNKino). We live in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The short is Resonance. It's a story of a man who lost his hearing as a child and regains it through surgery. It is 7 minutes long.

I am curious what you think about it. I feed on constructive criticism so say what's on your mind if you are inspired to do so. :Drogar-Happy(DBG):

You can watch Resonance here.

In addition to talking about the flow of our production, I have included some exciting before-and-after photos for filming and color grading.

I just watched it, and I thought you had excellent sound design. It was a touching piece, and I felt for him when all the sounds proved to be too much for his now very sensitive ears.

Kudos and keep up the good work.

Thanks for your feedback, johnnyevil!
As we were putting the plot together, we knew that it would be an intense job for our audio engineer, Charlie McCarron. Fortunately, this kind of experimental sound design is something he is passionate about.

I caught this last night and enjoyed it. I didnt quite make the connection to the little boy at the begining and the older guy. Was he in a coma for years? Was he deaf for years and had an operation to restore hearing? Was the injury enough to make him feel helpless like a child?

Anyway, i liked the shots and editing for the most part. Seemed to flow nicely, i think some editing could be done to trim just a little, but actually you kept it pretty smooth.

I really liked the sound effects, you had i think that really added a lot here. You also slowly built some tension toward the end that made the audience doubt what was happening, and then relieved it with a nice ending.

Good job, keep it up;.

Hey JonE5,

Thanks for your feedback!

Getting the initial shot to clearly convey what we wanted was definitely a challenge for us in the planning stages because we wanted to keep it short and with out narration. To clarify, the main character is the same person as the child. When he was young, he was in an unfortunate incident where he lost his hearing. We see him again later as an adult getting surgery. There was plenty of "life" in between these two points that we didn't touch on due to our constraints.

Out of curiosity, what would you have needed to see to make the connection better? The "coma" response is something we didn't predict but it does make sense. haha
