Resolve, O7Q and Audio

Not sure if this is just me but just realised the proxies i'd been generating have no audio in them and i'm damned if i can work out why.

Take the cDNG files into resolve, ensure the corresponding WAV files are in the edit. Can hear the audio on play back, but i've not been able to export a .mov with any audio. I've checked the Audio on output and tried 'as source' and 2 channels but to no avail.

Is it just me or is there a wider issue with this workflow?

thanks
Paul

I had this problem. Checked audio render in delivery then closed Resolve, saving settings. Opened it again and audio was present in exported movies. My problem now is every time I open my project I have to redo raw settings for project even though have previously set them. Roll on pro res.

Doesn't do it for me. I've found though that joining the video and audio together in a compound clip appears to do the job, however i loose metadata that way... Seems like an outright bug in the latest resolve lite.

Roll on proper support for cDNG.... :)

Are you on PC or Mac Paul? If the later are you using the version from the Apple App Store or the version you can download from the BMD website? (for some reason the two versions are different). If the former, try the latter.

if you're on PC / that doesn't work, put up a post on the BMD forum. They're really responsive with their support

I'm on a PC at the moment, it's the latest version though as i updated it yesterday. By taking the cDNG and the WAV on the timeline and making a compound clip it then appears to render out the audio. Trouble is i loose my Reel metadata and can find no way to burn in the compound clip name nor edit the reel name directly. It's not a biggie though as the proxies are good enough to edit with.

Thanks Colin i may try via the mac too

(did you get an email the other day from me, i've been having some email issues locally so never sure..)

cheers

I was just transcoding tonights shoot and am having the exact same problem! I found if I render out the entire timeline as one clip the audio is there. If I choose to output as single clips (what I want) then the audio simply doesn't render out.

I'll try the compound clip trick, thanks!

I was literally googling this issue 10mins before bed, couldn't find a satisfactory solution, checked dvxuser for the latest fs700 threads as I do and bam, here is my answer!

I have the same problem and tested "individual single clips" and "single clip" with and without linked audio in the edit window. It only works on my system with a rendered single clip. (iMac 2012, Resolve 10.1.lite)

I am also missing audio playback - I am quite sure I had it before. Unfortunately I am not very familiar to Resolve

Yeah, with a compound clip, you can only make 1 long clip and not individual clips, unless someone knows different. I've just been transcoding the clips out of Resolve, then doing a string out of the .mov and the .wav files in Premiere and matching them. It matches up quickly and it's pretty easy to do, but an extra step.

While Resolve is really fast and powerful, the navigation and protocols feel really dated compared to Adobe. Very simple things that you take for granted in Adobe like being able save a file wherever, the sound issues, the fact that the RAW setting re-set when you quit program, the need to "Refresh" when browsing files and a million other things makes it feel a program that is from the late 90's.

What i've been doing is to drag my clips to a timeline and then pop the wavs underneath each clip. Then select each clip and it's wav and create a compound clip. Repeat for each pair on the timeline and then that appears to work. You have to keep remembering to check the audio button on output (default is no, really?) before you run them off. If you use source filename then it will use the name of the compound clip to run out.

I understand where Resolve comes from but it can be such a pain at times. There are usually solutions but sometimes they're not intuitive compared to other applications. The fact that if you make a compound clip then the burn in data cannot access it's name and the fact that the reel name is suddenly unavailable for example. Or once you've named a compound clip you appear to not be able to rename it! There's probably some arcane way to do it but would involve sacrificing to the gods of black magic and frankly life's too short..

good news, guys! It took me some time but here's the quite simple solution.
/reading the manual can be quite helpful from time to time..

You have to sync clips in the MEDIA window not in the timeline.
If you link a clip in the timeline they are still seen as individual clips,
linking is only for moving or trimming. If you link clips in the media window
and than drag the video/DNG file in the timeline it will be treated as a single
clip also when rendered.

Import your footage to the media pool.
Set the Audio Panel mode pop-up menu in the Media page ,
which lets you view and scrub along the waveform of audio clips
you select in the Media Pool.

Select a video clip to sync, and move the Viewer playhead to the first frame.

Now, select whichever audio clip matches the current video clip in the
Viewer, to open its waveform into the audio panel. Move the playhead
to beginning of the audio clip.

click the small connect icon the right side of the audio window and you are done!

now you can edit your video clip in the timeline.
Description in the manual page 122 was a little confusion but helped in the end.

Reading the manual. So simple! Thanks Clermond.
After downloading and reading page 122, Black Magic seems to think they have an auto-sync feature for linking video and audio but I can't for the life of me get it to do anything. There isn't even a success or failure dialogue so I'm not even sure anything is happened at all. They are definitely not synced though.
The manual method is a real pain as I have 33 takes to process and this was just for a 1 minute short film. Imagine the hundreds of takes in a normal length short or even a feature!

Can anyone get auto-sync to work?

Edit ->
Just realised the CD wav files don't have proper timecode! The timecode of every wav starts at 0 seconds instead of the actual currently running timecode.
Have I set something wrong on the 7Q/fs700 or is this a bug?

For example (from the metadata window in Resolves Media Page)
Clip000060 DNG - Start T/C 05:16:55:09 - End T/C 05:17:51:11
Clip000060 WAV - Start T/C 00:00:00:00 - End T/C 00:00:59:02

Every single WAV is like this. Obviously Auto-syncing is not going to work via timecode. Maybe by clip name if that's an option?

Edit2 -> Nope. Only option for auto-sync is via timecode. So why aren't wav files getting the rec run timecode embedded in the 7Q?

only 33? I had a full 256 SSD plus 80GB from a second, 180 clips to trim and export and therefore to sync before. Sort the files by name in a list and you have the pairs together. 15mins. done.

Haha, you win the clip count.....this week :P

One of our shorts last year was 3 days of filming and a good 350 to 400 clips. Screw manual syncing that!
This would all be very easy if WAV timecode matched the DNG timecode. Right click -> sync via timecode. 2 clicks. done.

I'm guessing that's a bug rather than a feature. Could you do us all a favour an contact CD support about this issue (in case Mitch doesn't see it) so hopefully they can correct this before the firmware update this month.
