Hi All,
I have been following this forum for months and really appreciate your feedback. The information I have gotten has been invaluable... much appreciated!!! This is my first post.
I just purchased Resolve 10 from B and H photo to run on my new Mac Pro (late 2013). The machine is fully loaded (12 cores, 64 gig of factory RAM, 1gb SSD, 2 GPUs, etc.) every upgradable option was selected for this machine when purchased on Apple.com. I purchased the Resolve Software to be an integral part of my 4k workflow (Sony FS700 shot in 4k RAW on the Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q to be converted to PRORES for editing in FCPX). The .DNG files are perfect when transferred to my Mac Pro. I purchased Resolve primarily to convert the SLOG-2 .DNG files into a HQ 4K PRO RES file. My Mac Pro won't have it. It causes the machine to freeze, I cannot edit, I cannot colorize, and I cannot export. Resolve is unresponsive and then my entire computer follows suit. I have to reboot and then try again. I repeated the process no less than 10 times with the same results. I am running the latest version of Resolve 10.1.5.013. I tried uninstalling, reinstalling the software, etc., but no change.
I have on order a couple of the new G-Raid Studio Speed drives but performed my test on the internal SSD. I understand that SSDs may be insufficient so I ran the BlackMagic Studio Speed test and everything popped up green indicating no issues. After spending a couple of hours on various forums last night (including the BlackMagic forum), it came to my attention that it may be a CUDA issue. When I start Resolve this error message appears (NO CUDA Acceleration Hardware Detected! Please quite Resolve and install a CUDA accelerated GPU card or update your CUDA software driver to the latest version before continuing to use Resolve. CUDA driver updates can be done from the Mac System Preferences.) My machine is equipped with the latest version of CUDA (6.0.46). Unfortunately, it is also equipped with OS X 10.9.3 which was upgraded several weeks ago prior to my purchase of the Resolve software. From what I am reading the AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB graphics cards (two of them) will not work with Resolve and this version of OSX.
I then installed Resolve 10.1.5.013 onto my MacBook Pro (Retina Mid 2012, 2.7 i7, 16 GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics 4000). I was able to import the .DNG files, but I really feel like this machine is under powered for the job. Getting a single 15 second 4K clip out of the machine took about 20 minutes and everything was very sluggish. I was able to get the file exported, but this is not a practical workflow. If I shot several hours of 4K RAW footage, it would quite literally take a month to get things converted to usable ProRes files on my MacBook. Obviously, I don't have this kind of time.
I feel like I must be missing something. I have set myself up with the latest equipment and now seem to be stuck. How can the top of the line Mac Pro, built for video production, not work with "the industry standard" for color correction? I had really hoped to use the CD Odyssey for 4K ProRES but I have a project coming in 30 days and it seems like that is not going to happen. I am not reopening the "when will CD get the 4K ProRes to us" can of worms. I understand that it is coming as soon as they can. However, the client is requesting 4K. Aside from the client, I want to shoot in 4K, it was the only reason I purchased the 7Q. I figured I'd shoot this part of the project in RAW and then transition to 4k ProRES when available. From all of the frustrations over the weekend with the trial shoot, I wonder if this (Sony Firmware upgrade, Odyssey 7q, 4 512 cards, Resolve, etc.) have been bad investment.
Any work arounds would be greatly appreciated! I have to believe that there is a solution for all of this. Thanks, Grant!
