Resolve 18 Beta changes the game forever!

It looks like Resolve 18 adds the easy proxy/original footage switching that I've come to love in FCP

Looks like they have watch folder support as well that automatically creates proxy versions when transferred. Just transfer from SD cards and let it plow through all the media with zero extra input needed. By the time all media is transferred the proxy are ready to go. FCP will do this on import of course but this happens in the background for collaboration use where just having the media on a cloud drive could get converted automatically.

I guess I could be wrong but having not used FCP I looked at some online pages on the subject of the FCP magnetic timeline, spent some time watchintg and listening the tutorials. My takeaway is that either you are living in a bubble or I am, but I honestly didn't see a single editing feature in FCP that didn't have a direct counterpart in Resolve. I could only conclude that anyone saying the FCP magnetic timeline is an exclusive with FCP never used the Resolve CUT page with the Speed Editor. All the grouping, moving, rippling, slipping, splitting, ripple overwriting, appending, smart insterting, snapping, trim in/outs, place on top, marking, synching, linking, it's all there, and other features I didn't see in the videos as well. I assume FCP has counterparts for those but I didn't see anything as cool as the Resolve Cut Page, and the integration of the software interface to the Speed Editor. I would suggest you visit the product pages at BMD and see if you still come away thinking FCP's magnetic timeline tops this. From what I understand of it, the track based editing in Resolve is working with the Edit Page, but the Cut Page is a different way of working and the integration with the Speed Editor rips.

I do think you are wrong about this. Considering you have not used the magnetic timeline in FCP you clearly don't know how it really works. The Cut Page ripped off some of the basic functionality but its still nowhere near as fluid of a process as the magnetic timeline. Its not just about features or watching a video but actually using it. The user experience of the magnetic timeline wrapping itself around how an editor thinks. It becomes more of a natural extension when one gets used to it. It also does not require an extra hardware device to help speed up that process. It works out of the box, is organic and helps reduce editing errors when one gets used to it.

I'm sure the Cut Page closes the gap for some people but I can tell you its nowhere near exactly the same. I like the Cut Page and its a really good attempt at fixing what I feel is an archaic flawed view of video editing. The whole old school timeline track based methodology is flawed and outdated. Experienced editors do not want to move away from it based on their previous experience and understanding but its not the best possible user experience or method to cut together video. I give Resolve and Apple props for trying to explore a better way to edit. I really can't go back to a traditional track based system anymore. It feels like only cutting wood with a hand saw vs a table saw. Both can get the job done but I now prefer to use power tools.

Haha, I mean I personally have no idea. I haven't used the Cut page. But I really like the magnetic timeline in FCP and now that I've gotten used to it, I find it quite intuitive. The ease and speed with which I can rearrange things really helps me execute my plans and experiment with new ideas. I wish that FCP had some more granular control over certain project/layout and animation settings (more like Premiere), but beyond that I really enjoy using it

I am so tired of Premiere Pro crashing. The latest version of Premiere simply crashing every 2 to 15 minutes, not kidding. Are you guys experience crashing problems often in Premiere? I might have to just get rid of the cloud service and buy photoshop/Lightroom which I need and move on to another NLE.

im curious about your crashes. in 2017-2018 i went thru a bad time for PP CC with crashing on a 12 core mac pro (2012) on 2 separate computers. somehow the crashes just went away after that. my old 12 core only goes to High Sierra so i dont know about the newer versions of PP CC but you have me wondering now. are you PC or Mac? have these crashes occurred on several different computers or just the one your currently using? has this just started crashing with the new PP release? any crashes on the prior version of PP? just curious as im about to order a Mac Studio and looking forward to the newest versions of lots of software i use.

I'd like to know too. Sounds like esoteric B.S.

Perhaps but if you have not used FCP how do you know for sure? I know FCP editors that have used the Cut page in Resolve and think its just not the same. A good attempt and on the surface it gets close but its an overall different user experience and less fluid.

I just don't think you can accurately claim its the same thing without ever having used FCP. There can be similar functionality but a different overall user experience in how those features are used. I personally find the Cut page slower to respond and a bit clunker to use. Thats not to say the Cut page isn't nice because I do like it and I'm glad to see BMD actually make an attempt to move outside of the archaic concept of video editing. Having used both however I much prefer how FCP does it.

I've cut on FCP for years and can confidently say the Cut page in Resolve is not the same thing. I love Resolve, but the Cut page has a long way to go. That said, Blackmagic Design has given every indication that they are serious about developing all aspects of their NLE, including listening to users (except when it comes to ProRes RAW support...).

Something is definitely wrong on your end. I can't remember the last time Premiere crashed on me.

Absolutely. I am running the latest version of Premiere on two different MacBook Pros on an almost daily basis and I'd say it freezes up only about once a month. And I can't recall the last time I wasn't able to quickly get back to work, with no serious lost work, after a quick reboot.

Just to get back on the topic of the thread, Resolve Studio runs even smoother, with maybe one crash every 3-4 months.

I've been re-comparing SGamut3.cine/Slog3 vs SGamut3/Slog3 using Davinci's Colour Mgt Workspace with some older footage I'd shot in both gamuts. The argument for .cine is that the colour space is closer to DCI-P3 so it is easer to do a grade. The argument for SGamut3 is that it is capturing the full gamut of the sensor (which is much wider). https://www.sony.com.au/electronics/support/articles/00145905

The good news is that when I bring both into Resolve, they are correct identified and the ICT presents them in the timeline that (to my eyes) looks pretty much identical. eg, Resolve's Colour Mgd workspace does the technical grade. Here is a sample of both without any grading by me. Just put both on the timeline and selected a Rec709 output. https://behome.dyndns.info/index.php/s/pdJJbxf4bk4RKBe

As a result, I don't see any reason not to capture in the much wider SGamut3, that there is any benefit to SGamut3.cine..... or for that matter shooting in a non log "Look" like cinetone... or using apply LUTS. Resolves Colour Mgd workflow non destructively normalises the clips ready for creative grading. It is quick, easy, and accurate. The other big benefit is this works across a wide range of Footage from heaps of camera mfr, so mix and matching clips is now much much easer getting them all to the same technical grade ready for creative grading.
