Resolve 11 Color Checker

Saw this video today and was blown away by this feature. I hadn't paid much attention to it when they first talked about it and man, it's awesome! I don't have a color checker but I downloaded the footage, froze the frame and tried it myself. I copied and applied that to some of my own footage (I know, it's different light) and it still works wonders for skintones. It's crazy good. For those that have a color checker on hand, try this out!

I've used this for a few interviews and it's pretty amazing. The ColorChecker passport is great for how small it is, just keep it in your back pocket. It's almost like magic, when you look at before/after and see that it detected incredibly subtle shifts in the different color chips.

Does it work with other checkers too? I have a Datacolor SpyderChecker, which I prefer to the XRite one because it has a row specifically for skin tones.

Looking at the noise in the reds, you want to have something with good color to begin with, but this feature can be used to create accurate LUTs afterwards, so you get it close in-camera, and perfect with a LUT, then you can play with it further to apply the final look you want.

Edit:
I god excited and had to research this right away. Yes, it does support the SpyderCheckr (here). Awesome.

Yeah, I noticed it pumps red and that might be a bit of an issue for 8bit. Of course you can just grab it and bring it back down but something to watch for. I definitely want to try this with some BMCC footage.

I have a Spyder Checkr sitting on my desk and have wanted to test this out, but I've been stuck in post prod hell all week. I'm shooting tomorrow afternoon on a low pressure gig so I'll work in some checks with it. After I've got my shots I might just try a torture test with intentionally under/over exposed shots with the color checker to see how easily and how well Resolve can fix them.

Chart profiles assume a black body radiator light source, tungsten or true daylight full spectrum with no gaps or peaks. You can get some odd color tracking results with LED's or fluorescent lights even if the chart looks good.
