F3: Resolve 10 is now out of Beta

A point release of Resolve was released a couple of days ago. You can download 10.1 from the BM site. A few notable additions. It recognizes PSD files, audio now works with Sony MXF based files. I just played a few XDCAM clips and the audio played without the violent stuttering.

I have been running a Calibrated MP4-EX Plugin to get the XDCAM files to come up in Resolve on Windows. It is possible that Resolve will now play these files without the Plugin (on Windows) but someone else will have to test this.

There seems to be an issue with the FCP X XML file compatibility but the problem is supposed to be short lived according to other sources on the net. Please chime in if you understand the issue.

Here is the change list/read me for the Macintosh version of Resolve 10.1...

Resolve, in general, runs a LOT smoother with this release. So far no issues but I am not working on jobs that were previously in progress. There are reports of some people who have jobs started in a previous version, not working well.

I can not get Resolve 10.1 to open Sony F3 XDCAM files on Windows, but I will have to test it on MAC.

Andrew if I understood you correctly we should be able to open F3 files?

cheers,

No, I wasn't sure Dennis. It mentions in the Resolve 10.1 release notes that it handles Sony's audio in their MXF files which is pretty vague, in my view. Since I have the Calibrated Plugin installed I can't tell if a virgin install of 10.1 will handle the XDCAM files or not. From your test, it appears not.

I should note for those on Macintosh edit systems that this irritant is the ONLY issue I have had with Resolve on Windows. Having unfettered access to virtually any NVIDIA GPU makes putting together a Resolve box on Windows pretty easy. You still ought to follow Blackmagic's recommendations for Motherboards and the general array of decent NVIDIA GPUs. Some may find the lack of ProRes generation a problem. DNxHD or DPX is just fine for me for internal DI use.

Yes my install was on fresh Windows 7 x64 base system. But at least now I have learned about a plugin for MP4 EX files.. that is great and I will give this a whirl.

As of Davinci 9.14 or 9.16 in combination of OSX 10.8.2 you can run it on MACs with Radeon cards. I only know because about a year ago I got it working on a MACBook Pro. (although it heats up so bad I think you could light cigarettes off of it).

ProRes is exactly why I have installed it on a MAC as well, but I am a PC guy at heart.

Andrew can you check what version of QuickTime you are running on your windows machine where your calibrated plugin is working? I can't get the plugin to work so wondered about QT version.

updated to QT 7.6.6 as per notes, and apparently the XD-Decode plugin must also be instaled to use teh MP4-EX plug-in. So I have installed both plugins and now my QuickTime can play the MP4 files from the F3 but still show up black in Davinci.

Getting Davinci to read my F3 files without having to transcode would be a dream.

You still have to use the Calibrated Import Assist Plugin to bring them in. It places a wrapper around the files just like the Sony XDCAM Browser does. And yes you need th XD-Decode plugin as you have found out.

If you use nanoFlash files there is no rewrap necessary once you have the XD-Decode plug installed but XDCAM requires a rewrap.

I just discovered Cinemartin "Cinic" a couple of days ago which allows you to easily transcode pretty much any Sony format to ProRes.

Not good news regarding v 10.1 and imported exported "looks" from previous versions....

Recently I imported some grades that I saved from Resolve v9 and they grade the footage differently. I used the exact same footage as my side-by-side test.

Anyone else test or try this out? Want to make sure it's not something I'm doing wrong, but I do run both versions (9 and 10) on different computers so it was easy for me to test and re-test.

I read about a similar problem elsewhere. Your "look snapshots" will not shift in their entirety between versions 9 and 10.

But it sounds like your problem might be different. I wonder if it has something to do with colour spaces not being setup the same between your two versions of Resolve, or something to that effect.

I don't have Resolve 9 installed anymore so I can test this out. Version 10 is great once you get into the swing of it.

I checked all the important settings, in fact the clips look exactly the same in each version of resolve before grading, so I'm convinced its the "look / grade" that's being interpreted differently between versions. That is pretty crazy for anyone who has spent a lot of time creating complex grade templates, etc..

I'll see what BMD says about it.

Just heard that exported grades between version by design are not meant to work.

Still looking into it, but wow how shocking to hear that. Any grades you exported from your client jobs will be useless in newer versions of Resolve.

At the risk of sounding harsh.... man, is that stupid.

Resolve 10.1.2 is out with some Sony F series specific enhancements. Taken from their press release:

"...• Support for simultaneous video I/O for Resolve Live, when using Desktop Video 10 with a single DeckLink or Ultrastudio• Support for SLog3, SGamut3 and SGamut3Cine for Sony Raw
• Support for Sony SLog3 to Rec709 1D LUT
• Support for Sony SLog3-SGamut3Cine to Rec709 3D LUTs

and of course general performance and stability improvements."

After 4 weeks of playing around with v10 I will not be able to switch to 10 just yet.

Errors with failed exporting of grades (stills) to desktop, incompatibility with previous exported grades, errors and computer crashes importing XML files for round-trip color grading... its just too much not working at this point.

Maybe in a year or so it will be better, but certainly for me its not now.
