Resolution chart test between the DVX100p and HMC150p

I made a comparative test between the DVX100p (original) and the HMC150p.

I used the Mainconcept AVCHD to DVCProHD transcoder and transcoded in DV AVI (4:3 and 16:9 anamorphic) a test with a resolution chart.

I found that the Mainconcept transcoder softens the image when transcoding in SD. It also creates large blocks in the encoding.

So, to be able to better match the DVX100 (that is noticeably sharper), I had to set the Detail Level and V detail at +7. I also set the detail coring at about +3 to lower a little bit the added noise. By doing this, the resolution of the transcoded footage get closer to the DVX100.

I tried a second method. Instead of transcoding to SD with the transcoder, I simply played back my footage with the Panasonic DMP-BD35 Blu-ray player connected to my Avid Liquid Pro Break Out Box and capture the footage like a tape. I used the component connections.

By doing this, the resolution is much better. It matches the resolution of the DVX100 with the detail level set at 0 on the DVX and the HMC.

I also created some DVD's (with Liquid) with the resolution chart footage and a real world footage from a press conference that I filmed. I also created a DVD from the footage transcoded in DVCProHD. This DVD was created using Media Composer and Avid DVD.

I then captured back all the DVD's via my BOB using the component connections. I can say that the DVD created from the AVCProHD files is noticeably better and sharper than the others. In second place, the DVD created with the footage
captured in DV AVI followed closely with the transcoded SD (DV AVI) files with Detail Level and V detail set at +7 and Coring at +3.

Finally, I have to say that the HMC150 is better in low light when shooting in 30p compared to the DVX100 in 30p. Better low noise (slightly) and better sensibility.
