REShot my F3, Scarlet skin tone comparison.

I've seen live F3 footage only once at BVE in London- no setup, default setting (I actually swapped it to 709 mode) and loved it. Later seen other cameras: C300, Panasonic where they had whole setup with lights etc- all looked crap compared to F3. After this test I understand why I liked F3 look- it's just so good, organic and natural. I prefer it even over Scarlet.
F3 v Scarlet is almost like Eizo v Apple display- one made to look natural and real another to look "good" :)

GREAT test Timur - I wouldn't rule one camera out over the other - they both have their place. I like the punchiness of Scarlet footage. I love my Slog - but sometimes you want some punch

Timur,
Thanks once again for all the time you've put in these tests. They are incredibly useful.
I do have one question though.
The impression one is left with here both looking at the tests and your comments is that you would be stuck with the flatter image that you've gotten from the F3, but couldn't you have graded that to pretty much the same contrast and "snap" as the Red image?
Seems like the F3 offers more information in the shadows the , if you want it.

I'd love to see them graded to match the same contrast.

I really like the fact that Timur didn’t cut and run when he got the Scarlet and takes such a logical non fan boy approach to the cameras. Sure the Scarlet is 4K and is a more modern camera and you would think it would blow out the F3 but not the case. Unless you need 4K then yes. The choice is obvious, but this took some time to perform and I’m impressed with how the F3 performs or holds up to the Scarlet.
Thanks for the comparison. I’m renting the F3 on Monday for two shoots and couldn’t be happier to do so. I do wish the camera had slog but it doesn’t.

Cheers to you Timur!

4K needs much bigger sensor than RED is using (something more like Sony F65). F3 is good balance between sensor/resolution size. Sony could make F3 4K, but it could make it actually worse.

The F3 chip and F65 chip are identical in size. One is 3k(ish?)have the other is "8k" but sort of isnt cause their numbers dont add up. Sony says 20million it pixels imager. Thats not 8k.

Lost myself in thinking, as F65 is also way more noisy than F3.
The whole problem with digital sensors seams to be size- they keep same size and rise resolution (smaller photosites), but this lowers SN ratio.
F3 seams to have good balance- 4K needs much bigger sensor- just my theory :)

What is 8K- 8192x? ??
20mln/8192= 2440 (is this designed to cover 4K height?)

What do you mean? Like one that's destined for 1080?

I'm using the scarlet on a Nike spot this week. It's destination is web, most likely at 720p resolution.

That's what I meant.

I love the RED and for my next feature I'll either rent or buy one.
I know that RED has made a name for themselves and producers ask and pay for it, but in most cases as a producer and cinematographer the F3 is a better choice for 1080.

IT depends on the Job, the reason im using the RED in this case is that i can use EFlenses with the EF adapter, and have IS, and control over the iris. I cant do that on my F3. The C300 would actually be the best choice for this job, they want the files in PROresHQ, so i'd have to transcode ANYWAY! And I dont feel like dealing with the Pix240 as its a Doc job. the RED is actually the smallest, most compact camera for the job.

After weighing all the options this is the bet choice.

How funny, I just shot a web spot for Nike on the C300 two weeks ago! Doc style shoot, for a new set of golf clubs.
