Resfest - Info on new HD cams - Canon = wow!

Oh yes, some little more tidbits for you all ...

Canon changed the Iris wheel, so it is now an Infinity spinning wheel and they set a separate button to set menu items. There is also a record button placed near the iris wheel for being able to record from certain angles. There are focus readouts in the EVF/LCD as well as built in aspect ratio markers such as for 2.35:1.

Oh, and one more feature that both the Independent DP and I laughed at ... in place of the original film grain function is now a fade in/out to black or white option. Its like Canon has to put a useless feature on all their cameras .... almost like a trademark!

How many times did I hear Canon will be years before they release something. Now they release a full working camera and Panny's HVX is only 85% done!! Canon looks like they had a plan.

Canon has kinda slipstreamed them though with the announcement of the XL-H1. I think it was carefully timed just as people were getting bored of talking about the HVX and HD100.

Shame it is so pricy though.

mgalvan, I was at the presentation that Jan gave. I thought the footage was clear, sharp and handled the colors very well. The part showing the candle showed the range of this camera. The flame and smoke had detail. You can see a strand of hair hanging from a leaf. I also went over to the Canon area and I thought the Canon looked pretty good. This camera was also heavy ala HVX. Jan also mentioned that the camera would have a 36 variable frame but it wasn't implement as yet. I hope they throw in a 28 variable frame. The Canon rep did mention that the image can be flipped for the mini adapters. One up on the HVX. Jan said that may be in another version of the HVX that flipping the image would be implemented. The Canon HD camera looks sexy in black and it had a shoulder mount on it. I thought it was brilliant that Canon had their camera next to the HVX. Competition means lower prices for filmmakers and more features for the the companies to say "hey we are better than our competition". The footage from the HVX was superb and I'm still sold on the HVX. Cheers!

Yes, what you say here is quite true ... the Canon rep explained that they have been working on this camera for some time now. He said Canon didn't quite understand how companies like Panasonic announce products and then have really long periods before actually releasing them. He said their approach is usually unveil and then release very soon after ...

The whole purpose in announcing products well ahead of time is to build hype. It makes no business sense to me to for canon to announce a product a month before releasing it, allowing panasonic to get all the press and hype. They should have announced their plans around the same time as Panasonic. Sony announced its plans for the PS3 well ahead of its release time and to make sure Sony did not garner all the attention Microsoft announced their upgrade from the XBOX. Cannon should have done the same thing when plans for the hvx were released

Yeah, overall for the camera not being finished yet, the footage was pretty good. After giving a lot of thought about these cameras, I think i'm still in the HVX camp as its overall features still appeal most to me and are most practical for the purpose I will be buying the camera for (and I own the XL2 now).

Perhaps not - but realize that anyone who put aside the funds to buy an HVX200 plus some P2 cards for this time of year, has the funds to buy an XLH1. Futhermore, it seems like the XLH1 will be here first - considering they already have a working model.

Not only do they have access to the money set aside for the Pansonic product, but they have the benefit of instant gratification.

I think Panasonic announce the HVX to prevent people from buying Sony's FX1 (before seeing the HVX). Canon would have the same motive for an early announcement. But since Panny already did it, then it was probably better for Canon not to tip their hand.

There's one of those golden rules of marketing - "never create a demand for something that you can't fulfill." If Canon can ship their new HDV camera in good working order before Panasonic it will definitely help them sell more XL H1's.

Panasonic blew it badly when they showed up to NAB with a mock up of the HVX. They should have kept their mouths shut, let Sony have their 15 minutes of fame with the FX1 and once the HVX could make great pictures rocked the world with this great new camera. I'm sure the HVX will be a great camera, but the marketing folks at Panasonic should be [as donald Trump would say] fired.

My Canon zr-45 footage with Magic Bullet's Bleach Bypass, Joe's Filters Field Blender, Nattress's G Film Conversion, subtle 2 way Final Cut color correction uprezzed to 4800 x 2400 and film-outed to an IMAX screen blows away all these new-fangled technologies...I'm going back into my cave to rub wood together...good night.

No, it was IBC. My guess is Panasonic was using the same CCD like others because they just had to show something. It is like poker. They did know Canon is comming out with something but didn't know with what so Panasonic just put together a camcorder with most of the elements they are going to use and used the same interlaced CCD as the others in the "prototype".

Everyone was expecting a final prototype and a showreel made with this camcorder on IBC. What we got was a video showing the quality of the lens and the signal processing. It was miles away from a final prototype. The missing 15% if I'm not wrong was the CCD. They are not going to use the same CCD in the final product.

I'm just guessing here. But why do you think they showed an interlaced output only when the whole world is watching this camcorder because the progressive output? To output 720p clean image you need a progressive ccd. Isn't it just easier to show only one progressive output from a progressive camcorder and not an interlaced output from a progressive camcorder?

I hope you don't missunderstand it. My guess is that they didn't used the final progressive CCD in that prototype on IBC but an interlaced CCD. Why? I guess the software and optical and mechanical part is finished but they just wait with the CCD to be sure they don't give away too much to you.

I didn't see any specification of the CCD, did you?

I guess to my point, like Canon, Panasonic would not have any wild speculation about this product if they would not have announced anything about it until it was ready to ship. I got bored enough with this debate that I went out and purchased an HDV camera. Not my first choice, my only one.

If I build an HDV workflow that I'm happy with before the HVX comes out I'll probably stay with HDV. I would have probably waited on jumping into HD if Panasonic would not have announced anything. It appears that Panasonic is just as inept at marketing the DVX100b.

Sorry to sound so negative but its frustrating to like a product as much as most of us here like the DVX100 and dislike the company that manufactured it becuase their idea of honest communication is to speak in short sentences.

I'm sure that when the camera is ready they will ship all they can build which in their minds will offer some vindication. But I doubt they have any idea of how many customers they lost who chose a competing format for no other reason than Pansonic managed their communication and marketing so poorly.

just as most XL1 users never change their lens - they can, but they never do, yet they probably bought the camera for that "feature".

I keep hearing this in different threads but I don't understand it. I'm an XL2 owner and have spoken to MANY XL1-2 owners and we ALL own multiple lenses. At least two and many (like myself) own three. So I guess I don't understand where that line of thinking comes from....

I read a statistic that there have been 25% as many sales of XL1/2 lenses as there has been of cameras, suggesting around 3/4 of users own only the standard lens. Of the XL owners I know, that is about right.

Fair enough. But why anyone would buy the "system" and not take advantage of that is beyond me. I guess this is why I don't understand folks beating up on the 20X lens because of it's servo rings. Yes they suck for manual operation, but the lens does auto focus and OMS great - so you use that lens, when you need those functions. When I want to use a manual lens, I put one on - and it's a REAL manual lens. I also love the 3X wide angle....

Completely true Matt, I think that the answer is budget. I can afford a nice new HD100 or XLH1, but I can't be spending 12K to put new glass on it too. If I was to buy one of the two, it would be for form factor reasons over and HVX or Z1.
