Requesting Help for a Complicated Workflow (HVX/FS100/Mac+PC)

I've got a p.i.t.a. (pain in the woops) workflow and would like some suggestions from your experience.

After shooting on an FS100 in DVCProHD, I simply drop my footage into Final Cut Pro 2 and off I go... usually shoot in Quicktime PN, but don't mind P2 if needed.

However, a colleague at work needs the footage converted down to a standard definition AVI that can be dropped into Premiere Pro CS2 without needing to be rendered for him to edit his own cut. In other words, the equivalent of him capturing the footage from a miniDV tape.

Our timeline is critical, so waiting several hours to transcode just isn't a solution. I need a way to recapture my footage to a tape and then hand if off for them to capture in Premiere... or something similar.

One thing I tried is after getting all the clips on to my timeline in FCP, I put my HVX in VCR mode with a tape in the deck and tried to "Print to Video"... it played on the screen, and did engage recording on the camera, but the tape just advanced blank... didn't have time to mess with that, but if there was a way to do that it would make my life a little easier.

One note... I did shoot some tests in P2 and dropped into Premiere using RayLight - however, my colleague doesn't like that the red line indicating the need to render shows up above the timeline...

Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I can't figure this out, the boss told me I'd have to start shooting on tape myself (with HVX, it's like using a semi-truck to deliver a pizza, I know...)

Cheers,
-jh

If you shot in HD and must have an SD version of the footage, then unless you own a stand alone card that could re-encode on the fly, I can think of no way to avoid having to re-render your footage.

How long is the footage? I would guess if its short enough you could print it out to a p2 card then use the HVX's dub feature to dub it to tape? That would still take 2x real time (once to print to p2 and once to dub to tape)

The only workflow I've ever used when working with a Mac and a PC was simply because I did not have a p2store, the PC had no PCMCIA slot, and I needed the HVX to keep shooting while the footage was offloaded.

We'd dump the footage to a powerbook, copy it to a FAT32 hard drive, then use Cineform to create AVIs for premiere, edit in an HD timeline, and then simply print out an SD version of the footage at the end. Printing out an SD version still meant rendering time though, I cant' think of a way around that that isnt hardware based.

If you're going to end up on SD, what is the problem with working in SD to begin with? It does have a tape deck for a reason, or ose the HVXs built in dubbing feature to downconvert the footage to tape, or shoot in DVCPro50 to P2 if you must have the 4:2:2 color space.

By shooting DVCPro50 and dumping the p2 to Premiere using Raylight you should be able to avoid the rendering line while maintaining the best color space if its that important to you.

Valid points. My own projects require the HD footage, but my colleague repurposes my footage along with his own SD footage for his own projects. That's why I shoot HD to begin with. This wasn't planned, just something thrown at my this week. For love of the job, man!
