Reproduction - Trailer

Hello DVXUser!

I've recently completed a short that I'm submitting to festivals, but in the mean time I thought that I'd release a short trailer around on the web. Here's the synopsis:

The New Republic of Alberta flourishes after separating from Canada during the recession in 2010, but this success is made bitter sweet when the government begins reintroducing eugenics policies from Alberta's past. Gina Phillips and Mark Robson star in Alex Mitchell's ambitious blend of philosophy and speculative fiction as two ordinary citizens who's lives are deeply affected by the Department of Fertility and Reproductive Rights.

This was shot on a DVX-100b, but I uploaded a 720p master to make the Youtube version look as good as it could. Please rate it and let me know what you guys think!

I don't know if it's a faux pas to double post in my own thread, but the new website for Reproduction went up this last week and should be getting regular updates soon.

Also, the trailer has since made the rounds and even got picked up by the Newbury Film Series blog. They're going to be conducting and interview soon about the short and the creative process behind it.

In addition to all this, the film is pretty much done. My composer just got a new score to me this week, which means that the sound mix is pretty much finished. I think I'm going to get my actors in for a few quick re-shoots but other than that, and erasing a few brand logos here and there, the film is complete!

A quick question to everybody out there who might be interested: I would really like to distribute a DVD of this, free, online but I'm not sure about the best way to do it. I'm thinking that the best way to do this is by exporting a DMG from DVD Studio Pro but it also has options for DDP 2.00, CMF, and DDP 2.1. Does anyone know what applications use these kinds of disk images?

This stirred my thoughts and it looked well-done. Interesting and nice work.

Thanks Caritasfounder! It's hard to critique a short by its trailer but I do appreciate the feedback.

Anyway, as part of an effort to be really open about the project, here's the official soundtrack. It's only two songs, but I feel like my composer did a really spectacular job getting the tone right. Enjoy!

Hey Alex,

Loved the trailer and as the previous poster said, the idea really put a thought in my mind. Good job! However, I'm having trouble with your website. It's not allowing me to go to the other pages. It seems as if the links haven't been "linked."

Thanks for the kind words Bash!

I am also having trouble with the website. For some reason everything works fine in Safari, but once I try to access it in Firefox nothing works. So strange.

[Edit] P.S. Reproduction has been selected to play at the Calgary and Edmonton International Film Festivals! Here's to hoping the other fests get back to me soon.

Visually looked pretty good. The style you chose to shoot it in seems like the right pick. I only have two big problems with the trailer. I couldn't hear what the people were saying for the most part because the music was a little to loud. Not a big deal.

The only other thing that I didn't seem to get was the story. I understand that people aren't allowed to have children unless they take a test. That was clear, but then it has some guy eating a cheese burger and he doesn't like it or something. So he puts the rest under the bench and somebody else takes it. Then it sounds like the girl regretted taking it? I am not sure. I re-watched it for a second and third time, and just kind of skipped over that last little bit. It seemed to make more sense to me that way and made we wanting more. Maybe I am just dense like that. Nice work though and I would like to see the finished product. Good luck.

Haha, wow, those are some excellent points! Now that I watch the trailer again I can see what you mean. It does look a little weird having those shots together without contextualizing them. I'm going to make sure that I touch up the editing on the trailer to catch this.

Thanks man!
