If it's a microphone be sure to add in plenty of shock absorbtion. Gaff-taping your mic right to the camera (not sure if you were joking or not) will pick up a ridiculous amount of handling noise. I'm talking, slide your thumb on the far side of the camera = deep rumble gets picked up. Put some cloth in between or something.

I have a shoe mount, but it's usually occupied by a wireless receiver or a light. I do have a bracket that connects to the tripod screw hole, but it's a pain to put on. Thanks for the suggestions.

For $24 I just bought a three-way shoe splitter from NRG. Check it out at B&H. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/114982-REG/NRG_59111_59111_Accessory_Tri_Mount.html
I use it for my light and wireless receiver. You could easily attach a mic on there.
