FS7: Replacement EVF and/or Recorder

Haha, this place never ceases to crack me up

There has literally never been an EVF that offers the performance and features of the Gratical Eye for anywhere near as low a price-point. It's straight up never existed.

Yet still, people find a way to complain! Love it!

I don't care for the red anodizing on the Gratical Eye and unless they change that I'll never buy one.

How are you guys attaching the Gratical EYE with axis mini? I see icarusfilm has ditched the OEM handle, but I'd like to keep that (mainly just for the potential of hooking up a mic to the hot shoe) - curious about who has mounted the axis mini and EYE to the OEM handle.

I swapped Sony's Top Handle for one of Wooden Camera's, but the mount would work just as well with the OEM.

The main reason I went Vocas' is it can be broken down into smaller bits than the Axis Mini so takes up less room in my travel cases. I've subsequently swapped the Vocas arm for one from SmallRig that has dual NATO Rails, & use one side to mount the EYE, & on the other I mount the Sony monitor from the FS7's EVF.

Anyone who is worried about the cost of the Zactuo clip on is entirely free to source something like a used hasselblad chimney https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=h...3BzOTSAhWnK8AKHYe1CxAQsAQIGQ&biw=1630&bih=903

Then 3d print themselves a new mount.

After they finish the process they will either be pleased.. or think that $400 would have save a bunch of hassle (hassel?)

Am I mistaken or didn't someone say you can send a LUT out to an HDMi monitor without burning it in? That option doesn't seem to be available on my FS7.

Yes, I had to do it a few days ago, so it's fresh in my memory. In Video menu/Output Setting/HDMI Target - set to Monitor. That will make your ext monitor behave the same as your EVF - LUT and Cine EI switch etc.

I know it's sacrilegious to say this here, but I tried a £130 Feelworld FW60 monitor the other day, in 1080P and UHD. I couldn't visually see any difference from the SmallHD 702 I had on loan - it has a nice 1080x1200 IPS panel. Yep, it's crappy plastic and doesn't have internal LUTs or waveform (it has histo), but it's £130 and it has a Sony NPF battery plate on the back and an included sun hood. I did a one day shoot, using it as a reference monitor for colour, exposure and focus, and I'm thoroughly ashamed to admit it actually works. :-)

But I didn't tell you that, of course...

Thanks Ben, I will try that later today. If memory serves, however I had it set up I could only apply a LUT to the SDI 1 / internal but I can't remember exactly what the issue was that was preventing me from sending a LUT just to the HDMI monitor - which is what I want to do.

That is too funny that you mentioned that Feelworld... I just picked up a Bestview S7 4K monitor - which is probably the same IPS panel in the Feelworld. I bought it off of Amazon for like $200 so I figured it was worth a shot and worst case I return it. It supports DCI / UHD and claims to be 10bit; which I haven't fully tested butbased off a little viewing comparison with my 10bit grading monitor I do think it is probably at least 8bit+FRC but might actually be 10bits... either way that's probably good enough for my needs currently.

The panel itself makes a very nice, detailed image, the colors are pretty good (again compared side-by-side to my grading monitor with the same signal going to both) and I think I could dial them in better once time allows. At 450nits it's not going to be super effective outdoors in sunlight but for the cost difference to get into a "high bright"... at this point it's just not worth the added investment for MYneeds. It comes with a fairly decent sunshade that I'll try out soon to see how much that helps.

For $200 it's a lot better than I thought it would be and I don't have any of the 702s or 502s on-hand to compare it to but based off of what I am seeing I would not be surprised if it holds it own against monitors that are 6x it's cost when comparing just image quality. Obviously, as you said, it doesn't have on-board LUTs or waveform (which I was little frustrated because it advertised having waveform and histo both but only has histo which I, personally, don't care for). The build quality is a bit plastic but it's still pretty solid and there is some weight to the unit even without the battery - I imagine the build to be similar to say a Atomos recorder minus the drives. But if you just need a decent 7" monitor that delivers a very nice image, supports 4K at 10bits (or 8+FRC) and don't need on-board LUTs, waveform or high-bright then I don't think you find anything better at even 4x the price.

I found this monitor to be unusable.

-lots and lots of banding / posterisation, especially in low lights
-significant signal lag
-very very loud button clicks
-IRE values in "exposure" feature (which is supposed to work like zebras) refer to some internal values of the monitor, have nothing in common with true IRE values
-no HDMI loop through output
-unusable zoom function, need to click several times to go through all zoom ratios (plus the loud clicks)
-no 4K support, only UHD
