Replace floor in AE?

If I would like to create a big hole in the floor in some real footage, is the best way to use a green screen carpet or something in that way or is there an easier way?

Going to use handheld and tripod footage with a 35 mm adapter

Oh, and the hole is just black, not like a spot but a really deep hole.

Thanks in advanced

Hello Vinnie. I'm not exactly an After Effects expert, but I'm starting to get the hang of it. My answer to your green-screen question is: "it depends what you're doing."

In general, you should not need a green screen in order to achieve this effect. What you'll be doing is taking your footage and superimposing a picture of the hole (and blending it in, color-matching, etc.). There are a few considerations, of course:

- You want to make sure that the point-of-view of the hole and your footage matches (in other words, that they're viewed from the same angle).

- Depending on what software you have access to, you might want to lock down your camera and toss out the notion of using hand-held footage. If you have motion in your shots, that means that you're going to have to track that motion and make sure that the hole matches up to the camera movements. This makes the task significantly more challenging if you want the result to be believable.

- As for the green-screen. You MAY consider doing something like this if you have action taking place over the hole and you want to be able to easily separate foreground elements from the picture beneath. It all depends on what you're filming.

Hope that helps!

Zoidoid is correct. One more thing, is you might want to put two or even four items on the floor where the hole will be for tracking motion later. Even colored tape would work. Just make sure they stand out so AE can easily track. Make sure the hole is large enough to cover those spots though.

You only really need this if you're tracking a green screen shot. For tracking a regular shot, the actual scene is enough and markers may things more difficult.

I used to think the markers helped but after talking with the owner/creator of Syntheyes, it seems it might do more than good.
