Rental rates

No way to tell right now. Supply and demand, ya know. This little sucker is gonna be in high demand for quite a while.

Wow those sites listing the DVX as $300 a day are such ripoffs. I can get one for $45 bucks a day from my local film group. I would recommend joining a film organization in your area, as they're usually a lot cheaper than a normal business and all you do is pay an up front fee of like $80 or something for the whole year.

The links I posted were to professional rental houses in LA and Detroit. No doubt a film co-op situation would be cheaper. However, the pro houses will generally have a better selection and usually better maintained gear. (I said usually. Here come post about rental house horror stories). When I was coming up I took great advantage of rental deals from the houses. I would usually get a 7 for 3 deal (take the gear for 7 days, pay for 3) or, my fave, the weekend special (pay for Friday, keep it 'til Monday). What I am afraid of is that the demand for the HVX will kill any incentive to offer such deals.

Just FYI, normally the rental rate bears some relation to the cost of the item. Hardware like cameras etc often rent for 1% of the value/cost. So an approx $3000 DVX renting for $300/day would be quite normal. If the HVX costs twice as much one would expect if to rent for twice as much.

Supply and demand do influence the rates, primarily in the discount for rentals of longer than one day from the professional rental houses.

yup, my mistake, $300 is 10% not 1%. (nothing like looking foolish in a public arena!!) All things being equal one would still expect the rental rate for the new camera to be more. The rate is also driven by the life expectancy of the equipment and I would suspect (but do not know) that these cameras have a short life in a rental enviornment, and may need a lot of maintenance and repair-- tho once again I have no direct knowledge -- So clearly if you have significant need on a recurring basis, buying these cameras makes more sense than renting.

The rule of thumb used to be 1% of the purchase price = Day Rental Rate.

This has changed much since the advent of video equipment where, as Bill Turner
hinted, has a reduced life span... If not the fragility of the equipment then it's the
shorter useful life until the next generation makes the older less desireable.

Much film gear can still be rented based on the 1% principal, but forget it with video.

DVX100a rentals range from $175 to $350 per day, depending mostly on what
accessories are in the standard package. 3Days=1week is generally adhered to.

Hope this helps,
Brian Wells

Expect to pay $300-$400 for the camera and $100 per P2 card. So $500 for an HD capable packakge. Any more than $500 and you start looking into a Varicam package for $800.

The good news may be that having such high demand for the HVX will probably push demand for the other cams like the DVX100, Z1U, XL2, etc. down. Dealers will be more eager to rent them out and hence, lower rental rates for them.

I don't know why that will be good news. Once the HVX comes out, that is the camera I want to get my hands on for a test drive, or when I purchase one, I may need extras for some shoots.

There website only list the DVX100. I'm not sure if they have the 100A. I'm sure they'll be buying a few HVX's as soon as they are available.

Man, this can't be right. In Brazil, a whole fitted DVX package can be rented for R$250,00 , the equivalent to US$100,00. And that is with a good tripod, and quality mattebox and follow focus!

No wonder why there have been so many foreign productions shot here on soundstages...

Rosestar,
I wasn't specifically addressing your rental needs/ wants. I was just trying to paint a brighter picture for those that may want to continue shooting with the other cams that are currently available. Not everyone will immediately jump to the HVX. In fact, when it comes to HD acquisition, many shooters will continue to use HDV cams simply for economics and simplicity. Others will continue to work in SD. Whatever your course of action, I'm sure it will work out for you.

Here in Spain it's about 100 € = 130 $ more or less. How much do you think it should cost for a renting of 2 months. A local producer wants to rent my camera for a local tv program and I don't know what to tell him...

You both make strong points. It's good to hear aboout the rental prices in your countries. I would never have thought to ask! Yes, everything is more expensive here.

Rentals deals here are heavily negotiable. In other words, I probably would never pay the "list" price on a substantial rental item. Taubkin's deal sounds incredible, though. I don't think I'd find a deal that good here in the states, unless it was a private rental from a friend or something. Every store is different. For example, there is a rental house in Chicago that rents out the Panasonic SDX900 for $350/Day, but the lens is additional.. and the lens rental doubles the price! Another rental store lets out the Aaton A-Minima S16mm film camera for $175/Day.. but again, the lens rental and a few accessories make it jump to $450/Day in a hurry.

Even so, rental rates on DVX100's and all the smaller camcorders seem disproportionately over-priced. That's probably why most folks here just buy their camera packages and only rent when they need a bigger system (SDX900, film equipment, etc.)

Hope this perspective from the U.S. of A. helps.

I know many things are more expensive in the USA but not dv cameras, electronics in general... Lists prices look quite similar or now even cheaper in the USA because of the value of the Euro 1€=1,25$ That's why it sounds strange. Anyway thanks for your info! :-)
