Rendering for Posting

What's the best template to use for rendering clips I intend to post? It seems like everybody uses .mov files. What are the best video options do get a managable file size and decent quality?

Re: Rendering for Posting

Yes , i'm wondering the same thing. I normally use the media encoder that comes with Premeire pro but exporting to quicktime usualy results in a loss of audio quality and i can't seem to make it decent sounding. Windows media is pretty good though.

So what's the secret to getting nice looking .mov's with good sound quality and respectable file size.

Like the ones on the quicktime site are high quality and audio sounds ok, but their file sizes are so low... They must use better encoders right?

What can be done?

Re: Rendering for Posting

I'm assuming Quicktime uses actual hardware based compression which is much better but also much costlier - for their movies.

EDIT: to avoid confusion - their website is what I'm referencing

Re: Rendering for Posting

I use Sorenson Squeeze, which is an AMAZING program for squeezing videos.

Re: Rendering for Posting

Quicktime definately uses Software based compression.

Unless you have a specific board that is tailored to work with a specific Codec.

of course if you want to get technical.. you could say that even software based compression is hardware based.. since incidently the software runs on the hardware ;)

and just for clarification, "rendering" isn't a correct term in this instance, rendering takes place upon decompression and display of the frame.

Compression is the correct term here.

and to answer the actual question here ;)

.mov files have nothing to do with file size, that is just a designation for a Quicktime File.

QT supports over 20 different Codecs... it is a matter of choosing the right one that will give you the best quality vs. file size.

In some respects I would say Windows Media is better at this point in time.. in terms of both quality and file size.. but that will be debatable when the new MPEG4 standard H.264 gets rolled into QT Pro.

as of now.. on the mac.. under quicktime my personal choice for codecs is:

- Sorenson Media
- MPEG4 video/MPEG1

yes. I've been just using the encoders taht come with the program. windows media DOES seem to do a much better job.. but somepeople can't view Windows so I'd rather know what to use for QT files...

Re: Rendering for Posting

I use VEGAS and Render as an MPEG 2. Full size; and then SQUEEZE in Sorenson. I agree, it does an incredible job of compressing. I recently turned a 220 MB 720 X 480 into a 29 MB 480 X 266 (Crop the balck bars off with Sorenson).

Now why is this in the SCREENGRBAS section? :D

Re: Rendering for Posting

Sorenson is $50? Is there a good way to do it that doesn't cost money?

I put it in Screen Grabs/Clips of DVX Footage because it has to do with posting "Clips of DVX Footage." Wrong Place? Sorry.

Re: Rendering for Posting

Here are some Quicktime Conversion settings that work for me:

Settings

I use Sorenson Video 3 because it has the widest compatiblity. I actually prefer On2 VP3 (higher quality, smaller file size) but a lot of people don't have that codec on their player.

I use anywhere between medium or high quality setting depending on the
quality/file-size I want.

Uncheck "limit data rate". Thats more for streaming video and will over-ride your quality setting.

If you want to reduce your file size you can go as low as 15fps.

Filters

Adjustments>HSL Balance> Raise the "Lightness" anywhere from 110-115. This will compensate for the "darker look" compressed movies get.

Size

I use custom sizes. 640x480 for large file size or 320x240 for small file size.

Sound Settings

For compressor I use IMA 4:1. There are a couple that will give you a smaller file size (like Qdesign Music 2) but your quality will really suffer.

A tip I learned from a tutorial somewhere (I wish I could find it again) is to lower your Audio Rate to 32khz and check mono instead of stereo to shave off a bit of your file size without affecting the quality too much.
