Rendering 1080p HMC40 footage to DVD NTSC Widescreen without black bars

Is there some kind of aspect ratio correction or crop or zoom or whatever that I should do inside of premiere before I go to render my final video? No matter what settings I use, it's always got a slim back bar on either side of the footage. What's the proper way to convert my footage to fit that frame?

I get that too -- tiny black verticals on either side. Just when down converting from 1920 x 1080 to standard DVD (720 x 480) and looking at it on a 16:9 TV.

I haven't found out what causes that yet, but other than that the video looks good and sounds good. I'm guessing Premiere Pro is fighting some aspect ration problem or other in going from HD to SD, but IDK. It would be nice if someone who actually does know would post and let us know what's really going on under the hood of the down-conversion.

Its actually not a bug, it is designed to work just like this. By using the new pixel aspect ratios that was introduced in CS4 a circle is a perfect circle when you downscale it from HD to SD. That is not the case with any pre-CS4 version and the video is slightly distorted when downscaling HD to SD.

To get around it, use the "Crop the output video" up left in the Export Settings dialog to crop Top and Bottom by 13 pixels. Switch over to the Output tab in the same dialog to see the result prior to exporting it. Re-adjust if needed. Do it once and save it as a Preset.

There is a looooong thread about this somewhere over in the Adobe's own forum.

It happens in any NLE, because SD widescreen is wider than true 16:9, while HD is true 16:9. Thus, the narrow black bars on the sides.
