Removing HVX200's internal mic

Hey everyone,

I would like to know if anyone has any experience removing the internal mic. It's a pain in the butt monitoring audio levels on my external mic because the internal also produces audio level monitoring even though it is on ch. 3 and ch. 4 (DVCPRO). Also, when my sound guy is monitoring audio on the headphones, the internal mic picks up unwanted ambience that otherwise won't be heard via external mic. I tried taping over the mic in an attempt to mute it, but it still can be heard. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

You could try not selecting those mics via the switches that to select which mics are recording on 1 and 2. I believe selecting this option will be much easier then removing the mics.

Hey, thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately that is not an option when recording DVCPRO on the HVX. It records the External mic(s) on CH. 1 and 2, but keeps the internal mic on as sort of a backup on Ch. 3 and 4. I've been searching for a solution for about a week now, but the closest thing I could find was Mr. Green half-jokingly saying to remove the internal mic with a pair of pliers. I'm getting pretty fed up with it to the point where I may actually do that...

I've gotten pretty spoiled with the DVX not doing having this problem, but I recently upgraded and the HVX and this is my only complaint. It's especially hard whenever I'm foleying... I don't have another way to record sounds without using the onboard XLR jacks.

Hold up here. That's not how it works...

Just go in the menus, you might have it set up to be outputting 3 & 4 on the headphones instead of 1 & 2.

Go to Playback Functions -> Audio Out. If you have your camera configured so that CH1 = XLR1 and CH2 = XLR2, then you want to set Audio Out to CH1 * CH2. That will have the headphones outputting only what's on CH1 and CH2. It will *not* be playing back what's on 3 & 4.

If it's set to CH3 * CH4, then I can see how he'd be hearing the onboard mic, but if it's set to CH1 * CH2, and your channel select switches are for the XLRs, then you shouldn't ever be hearing or seeing the onboard mic. The onboard will be going to 3 & 4, yes, but you won't have access to 3 & 4 in-camera so they won't be polluting your monitoring.

The situation you're describing could only happen if you were recording 25-megabit DV on tape, and if you'd chosen 32KHz 4-channel mode on tape; in that mode, you can choose "MIX" which will output all 4 channels.

WAIT -- there's another thing that might be causing it -- is it the dreaded headphone echo? Go into the menus and look for HP MODE and make sure it's set to LIVE and not to RECORDING.

Ok, just figured out what you meant by Playback Functions -> Audio Out. The problem is not replaying the footage, but rather monitoring the sound using the headphone jack while filming. The internal mic can be heard along with the external mic even though I have Channels 1 and 2 set to "Input 2".

This is a problem because the internal mic picks up noises that are unnecessarily clogging up the headphones and the audio levels meter. Thanks for your help so far.

Before dismissing HVX info from Barry Green please try the suggestion and report as to if it worked. My guess is that this is your issue. I forgot about this as it is a set and forget option that almost never get changed.

Haha, yeah sorry about that. I did the setting change under Playback Functions -> Audio Out last night and didn't get a chance to test it with the ext. mic. However, I just got back from doing some more shooting this morning and the problem was gone. Thanks so much for the input. I'm so happy I don't have to beat the crap out of my HVX now hahaha.

Where in the world in Playback Functions in the menu? I've been looking all over the place but can't find it. Help!

Ya, I guess you could say Barry wrote the book......as a matter of fact, he did! If you don't have it, his HVX-HPX book is very useful.

I actually do have it and have been turning my office upside down to find it. No luck so far :(
