Removing focus and zoom rings?

I was wondering if anyone has experience breaking down the camera and removing the zoom and focus rings. I recently shot in a desert for a couple of days and can hear sand under the rings.

Any help is appreciated.

Whatever you do, stop turning the zoom and focus rings if you don't need to because it wil cause permenent damage to the plastic and it will always feel rough even if you have it profesionally cleaned.

We have performed many many ring cleanings. Just taking the rings apart and wiping things off with a paper towel won't do it. We have had to do some pretty in depth cleaning of all lubricant and then replace it with a special lubricant or else things don't work right at all. The lubricant almost works like a liquid bearing.

Let me know if you need us to take a look at it. Otherwise, everybody else is replaceing the lens and that can get expensive. Lens replacement is a worst case senerio if the plastic has been scratched too much.
