Removing a car

I think Mocha Pro has the ability to remove the Honda Civic in the shot below. (Or maybe you have another program/technique in mind) Unfortunately Mocha AE won't do the job, and I don't want to purchase Mocha Pro and go through the learning curve for this single shot. If anybody is interested in helping me out, please let me know. I would be happy to offer some pay and a credit in the movie if you are able to remove the civic in this shot. This is the opening shot of my first feature film. If you are interested send me an email or PM. Or if you think this is doable with After Effects, Photoshop, and Mocha AE, let me know. Thanks

Your scene is shot with a camera on a tripod, with action that does not overlap, and a background that really never changes. While Mocha would make removing the car almost automatic, you could do this shot in AE alone or probably even do it in Photoshop. Think of it this way: you want to replace the car with the "image behind the car" using the pixels from another frame. So if you cut the pixels that make up the car from frame one and replaces them with pixels that make up the street from about frame 80, it would show no car.

The easiest way to do this would probably to make a clean-plate (an image of the scene without the cars) then place it behind/ beneath the footage and move a rough mask around the car as it moves through the scene. If you did not shoot a clean-plate, just make one using a few frames from the footage you shot. I won't be back to my editing system until late Wednesday, but could probably knock it out for you in short-order if you haven't already tried it by then.

Thanks for help, Jim. As soon as you described the procedure, I wondered why that didn't occur to me. I was fixated on Mocha Pro and it didn't even occur to me I could do it the way you described. I just made a clean plate in photoshop, and then spent a little time tediously positioning it behind the layer with Honda masked out. Thanks again!!

You are welcome! I have sometimes done the same thing, sort of like trying to solve a much more complicated problem than the one I had in front of me. BTW, Mocha is worth the time to learn as it makes some effect or tracking shots almost automatic.
