Removing 24p from 60p

I think this has been discussed. I tried searching but the results were a bit vague.

720 24p shot and captured on FS in the 60p stream. Ingested to FCP in the 60p stream.

How do I get it back to 24p native. Do I need to do it at ingestion? What app or work flow?

Is there anyway to do this after it is already in FCP?

Thanks for any help.

Cheers,
Chris

Once in FCP, best way is to use the Frame Rate Converter (FRC) plug-in. At ingest in FCP 5.1 and greater, just check the box that says "Remove duplicate frames" (or something like that). FCP will then remove the pulldown at ingest and you will have 23.98 files, ready to drop into a 23.98 timeline.

Not sure what you mean here about trick in reingesting. Essentially, all you are doing is checking the remove duplicate frames box. It really does not matter what the source of the footage is.

I guess I meant that - could you get FCP to remove the duplicate frames once the files have already been pulled off the FS and the FS has been wiped clean. The files are now FCP .mov files.

The files were pulled off the FS at the office FCP using 5.1. I'm in the process of upgrading the FCP on my home machine to 5.1 I have the files on my FW drive and want to manage the media back to 24p.

I gotta mess around some more with FCP once I get it upgraded.

Cheers,
Chris

Yes, the files are then .mov files. I think the best workflow if your project needs to have legs is to copy the raw mxf files to disk as your archive. This becomes in effect your master tape. Then, you still have the master files in case you ever need mxf to go to say Avid or for when FCP reads mxf natively. That will give you a double set of files-- the .mov created by FCP and the native mxf. If it is only a throw-away and you don't care to have the original files, then don't copy the mxf files.

Hey Knock Out - so you have the proj file on your home machine and you want to reconnect to the media, right?
In fcp's Browser cntrl/rt click the media file then choose reconnect from the dropdown. Navigate to the new location.
Not sure - fcp MAY give you the option at that stage to remove the frames when you reconnect to the file.

Or the other way is to use Cinema Tools directly on the file (which will do the job if fcp doesn't as above), then bring the files into fcp.

With 720 24p, the "remove advanced pulldown" function/box should work effectively if checked in FCP 5.1, and you should have clips at 23.98. In your browser in FCP, scroll to the right and see what the "fps" info is regarding your clips. If after you have selected "remove advanced pulldown", the clips are still not 23.98 post import,
then open the individual clips or batch open the clips in "Cinema Tools" and reverse telecine the clips to 23.98, and then put them back into the FCP browser.

I have only needed to use the Cinema Tools work-around for 1080 24pA footage. You shouldn't have a problem with 720 24p clips, but if you do, there's your solution.
