Remote Start/Stop button for HPX170

I have been trying to find a product like the Origo Start/Stop Button (for RED) that works with the HPX170. I know Varizoom and Manfrotto make remote lens controllers, but I don't need zoom, iris and would prefer not to have to work around those knobs and dials without inadvertently touching them and throwing the adapter setup out of whack.

Does anyone know of a product that does this for the HPX?

"The Origo Intelligent Remote allows remote start and stopping of the RED One Camera."

LANC doesn't work with the Panasonic products. Any HVX200 or DVX100B remote will work with the HPX170. VariZoom makes some affordable ones. The HVX, HPX170, and DVX100B all have remote iris/focus and remote zoom and start-stop. The DVX100 and DVX100A only had remote zoom & start-stop. So you could get a DVX100 controller and that will have just remote control for starting recording (and also zoom).

Ah, okay. I didn't think LANC was right, but I feel like there's conflicting info on which controllers work (some vendors use "etc" in their compatibility lists!) so I'm glad to know that the DVX controllers WILL work on newer Pana cams. Thanks, Barry.

What is with the Libec controllers (ex. Libec ZC-3DV) that say LANC and Panasonic compatible? Is this disinformation or are they ambi-turners?

what am I missing here? why don't you just use the remote that comes with the camera? or do you not have line-of-sight?
DOH! Five points for Mr. Campbell! I shoulda thought of that.

Obviously that's the easiest solution (and free), provided that you have line of sight to the camera.

Good thought, but I'm afraid it may not work for me this time – reason for asking the initial question:

I'm going to be using the camera on a large shoulder rig and shooting live sports, so the solution I'm looking for would allow me to keep the camera on my shoulder (and hands on the grips to pan quickly) while controlling start/stop record on a dime.

My first thought was to find a remote start/stop record similar to Origo. If there are other creative solutions, such as the accessory remote, I'm all ears.

Thanks!

I agree with andersonnd's needs ... I am a documentary filmmaker and would like to have a wired remote switch (for both the HPX500 and HVX200) that has only the start/stop button... a button that could be incorporated into a custom grip for handholding... I prefer to manually control zoom (for quickness), iris and focus ... after years of shooting film, it's a habit I can't break. I am not aware of the Origo.

I currently have a ZOE on the HVX and a Varizoom on the HPX500, but would really prefer a simple button.. I've even thought of having one (or two) custom made.. an off-the-shelf solution would be preferable.

Heads' up. I've been through 2 varizooms on my HVX and it just died. I won't be buying a 3rd. All the problems were with the focus potentiometer, the zoom, Rec/Puaus, and Iris have held up fine. I tried their support and they were less than helpful.

I wish Panasonic would allow power on/off like my Sony does with their LANC. I shoot nature photography very close to animals and this was a very handy feature.

Also, does anyone know if any company besides Varizoom makes a combo iris, focus, zoom, s/s? You need two devices with Manfrotto and two for bebob/zoe. This is a pain and pretty expensive for what it does.

What is your experience with the rocker feature? I have always avoided it in favor of a large, steady wheel design. Power on/off would be a nice little bonus – I've never had that before.

Would duct tape be strong enough to hold an Aaton grip to the side of the Panny? :)

I have an Aaton XTR, and have wanted to use the nice walnut grip with my HPX500... There are several mini-rod based adapters that would allow mounting it, but the problem is - still - the on/off switch (it's a rocker on the Aaton and a push on/push off switch is what's needed).

I asked a guy that used to maintain my decks if he could build one for me - seems simple enough - but he said it's more complicated than it seems.

Although I primarily want something for the 500, a version (different electronics, of course) would be nice for the smaller cameras when using a lens adapter, as mentioned above... Maybe Red Rock or someone is listening...

I've used one of these, the LIBEC, (still have/use the original) on both of my HVX-200's and now the HPX-170 without any issues whatsoever.
