Remote for HVX-200

When info on the HVX first came out, I believe I read that you would be able to control, focus, zoom, and iris remotely. I have now read, that there are no servos for the zoom. If this is true, will there be a way to remote control the above mentioned functions?

I find that even at 6'4", I need to put my DVX too high to manually control the zoom. Therefore a remote has to be used.

where did you read that? .. the national inquirer? it will have a servo.. and it will be able to be operated remotely.

Take a look at page 22 of the May 05 issue of Videography. Top of the page. "Rather than a servo zoom, Panasonic has opted for a true manual zoom".

Never read the National Inquire.

notice the zoom control right where it is on the DVX and any other palm style camcorder.. theres also one on the top handle.. same as DVX. im sure it uses the same or an improoved cam driven manual zoom mech as the DVX , and it has been confirmed to be able to operate remotely .. just like the DVX -- through a lanc type control cable and i would imagine through the wireless remote just like the DVx can. ..so it DOES have a manual cam driven zoom.. but you can switch between it and servo drive.. just like the DVX.

..unfortunaltely theres alot of incorrect info out there.. even in paces like "videography" magazine.

hope this helps.

edit: jan to the rescue.. thanks jan! you beat me to it.. i had to go and get a snazzy picture.

Of course, the bigger question is, what do you shoot that regularly requires the DVX to be seven feet (or more) off the ground?

Hi,

Didn't read all the way to the biginning. I have the threads in current first, so sometimes I don't get down to the beginning. So to answer AZsspvideo, yes there will be a remote connection, not only for zoom and Stop/Start but also for focus.

Hope this helps,

Jan

Jan,

A couple of questions regarding the remote focus, do you have any information about the type of signal to be used to control the focus remote. Will it be a serial data connection similar to LANC, an analog voltage, or something else? Will there be any published data for third party developers to be able to work with the interface without reverse engineering or will they need to be official Panasonic hardware partners to get access to the protocol? And will the focus readout be able to be output over the s-video / composite SD connectors for remote viewing. It would be wonderful to be able to see the numeric scale on an outboard preview monitor with the camera on a crane for instance.

Thanks,

Don't know the other answers yet, but as far as getting the scale to display on an external monitor -- you can do this with the DVX now (by turning Video OSD -> ON), so presumably the HVX will offer that as well.

Thanks Barry. I'm hopefull that the remote system will be precise enough to allow a Bartec style remote follow focus to be adapted to the system, use the existing transmitter and create a reciever that bridges the wireless signal to the HVX protocol. Having a "Real" wireless follow focus for this camera will put it one more step ahead for single camera dramatic work (granted, the follow focus will end up costing as much as the camera!!!)

Jan,

Again thank you. I thought that I had read that when the camera was introduced at the NAB. Now the trick is to earn enough money to purchase one and move up to the P-2. I have to say that my business is up by 106% over last year, so if things go right between now and when the 200 come out....I will add it to my list of Panasonic Cameras.
