REMOTE DVD DEVISE for downloading Stills & Video from Canon 5D ??

Other than using a lap top computer, is there any way to transfer still and video data from the CF card to a DVD with some kind of remote devise that uses batteries AND an AC adapter ??

About 5 years ago when I was shooting in Thailand, at the end of the day I could download all the images into a portable CD devise, so everything was kept on CDs. Now, with the higher MP per image of the Canon 5D, I need a "DVD" devise to hold all the data.

If there is just no such devise, what would be the cheapest lap top with the highest capacity hard drive that I could get away with for still AND video ?

Thanks.

If you new the answer to your question or could find it an hour after posting your original then why did you post in the first place? It's fine if you realized soon after posting, it just rubbed me the wrong way how you responded to the comment.

On a related note, I wouldn't trust any DVD media to backup my data. DVDs and CDs are netorious for going bad with very little consistency or predictability no matter what grade or brand you buy. Tests have shown that DVDs from the same line and same manufacturer could have vastly different archival capabilities because manufactuerers frequently change the technique and materials used to construct the media in order to improve performance or cut costs.

Oh, well gee, the last thing I'd ever want to do is rub YOU the wrong way. I'm going to lose sleep over the thought of that tonight. BTW, "new" is spelled "knew".

After I posted the question, I happened to find that devise, but I responded to find out if anyone was familiar with it and knew if it was any good.

I am perfectly aware of questionable qualities of DVDs, but that was not my question, now was it?

It might be better in the future to remember that politeness and courtesy will get you a lot further in life.

Sell for about $350.oo at Adorama.

...and you think laptop is two words, device is spelled "devise" and $350 has two 'o's after the decimal?...get over yourself. Why do you bother posting if you are going to snap at everyone that responds or says something that you disagree with.

You seem to have all the answers..i guess you're too good for anybodies suggestions or tips.

Funny you didn't seem to ask if anyone was familiar with your "devise" you just blasted derek for giving you an answer that wasn't correct.

I'm not the one with politeness issues my friend. I won't disagree that if I was nicer I could go further in life..I think thats true for anyone but being nice to someone like you isn't going to make a difference.

OK, OK, let's stop this bashing of one another.

If I did not phrase something correctly that just means that I'm not perfect, but neither is anyone else. I guess I just got perturbed at your comeback like you did at my question. I should have realized you're only human too.

I'm sure you're a very nice guy and meant well, but so did I. And, a simple question blew way out of proportion. Forget I ever asked it.

PEACE !!

If you want a device that can backup data onsite temporarily until you offload it in the editing room so that you always have two copies and want something more portable than a laptop you can use something like this:

It's going to be more reliable than DVD media. If its not for backup reason but rather so that you can offload your CF cards and reuse them I would recommend just buying additional CF cards...you will be paying slightly more than portable HD like the above but you will get more stability and will make your shooting workflow more efficient.

For us having such a rough start, you have been very kind, and I appreciate it very much.

That device looks exactly like what I'm looking for, and I think three of them just might do the trick. I didn't even know those existed.

When I shot with my Nikon D2X in Borneo and Asia for 4 months, I had to use a portable CD burner so CDs could hold the data until I got home to download it into my PC. It was a pain in the ass 'cause I had to have so many CDs, about 500. I don't think I had any choice 5 years ago. This time, we'll be traveling in Africa for one to three months, and I'd sure rather not carry a bunch of CDs or DVDs if I can help it.

The only thing that bothers me a little, is that I cannot view the images or videos once downloaded into that device. With a laptop I could, but I doubt I could get a laptop with a 500-750GB hard drive for the $400.oo three of those would cost me.

I saw this one too on B&H. Do you have any experience with it?

Thanks again for your help. I must confess to you that I'm not a big fan of Canon. I've shot Nikon all my life, but the 5D puts out the BEST HD video of any DSLR at the moment, so that's what I want while I await the Scarlet (if it ever comes).

Take care and be well.

Some of these products offer a Photo playback..doubt any of them would be able too play back video from the 5D or RAW files.

I don't have any real experience with any of them. I know someone that has been using them i've just never had the need.

In regards to the 5D putting out the best HD video compared to other VDSLRs..I won't disagree with you but there has been a lot of debate lately on the topic when compared to the GH1 and the new hack. When it comes to Nikon v.s Canon, I have always shot Canon and never buy Nikon but thats because I'm invested in the brand and equipment. Nikon is equally as good and has just as clean sensors and equally good selection of glass. Panasonic does not but for video, adapting glass from another manufacturer isn't a problem. DSLR still photography is where choosing Nikon or Canon is important IMO.

Nice! I wonder if THIS one could handle the HD video coming out of the 5D:

Supported Files
Image: JPEG, Tiff, BMP, GIF, RAW (Firmware updates for new RAW files available)
Music: MP3, WMA, AAC
Video: MPEG-1, MPEG-4 SP

After researching it further and further, I think the best choice is to bite the bullet and get an inexpensive laptop, with a separate CF card reader.
