Remote battery charge?

Hey all,
I am looking for some device that I could use to recharge batteries in the back country. A friend of mine wants to do a back country fly fishing video next summer, and don't want to be stopped by not having enough battery power. Are their any devices that can regarge the panny batteries remotely? Or am I just going to have to buy three or four of the extra long ones?

Also, are their any accessories that would help me alot in the back country?

Will you have access to a vehicle? you can pickup a car charger if so.

If not, there's plenty of battery charger type things, but they tend to run a bit pricey. I picked up a TEKKEON Rechargeable Universal Battery MP3300 for $45 off of ebay.

I use it for my external LCD, so you'd have to check the specs to make sure it'll charge the batterys via the charger (but I think it will).

2. A mattebox would help outdoors, and you may want to pick up a rain/dust cover for the camera.

I will have access to a vehicle up unto the point where the road ends and the shooting begins. That link was pretty helpful, that might be what i do. Yes, I am getting a mattebox anyway (shooting in snow, you know) and thanks for the suggestion of a rain cover.

I have a similar question -- Is it possible to rig up a way to power a DVX100a using a car battery? Although cumbersome to lug from place to place, I would think a car battery would run the camera for a long, long time. Right?

I go into the backcountry of Yellowstone quite often. I just bulk up on extra DVXUser batteries.

I'll be headed out to Yellowstone in February so I'll probably order a couple more just to be safe.

I have the Dolgin 4 position battery charger http://www.dolgin.net/Battery_Charger_TC400.htm that I use when I come back for a break and quickly charge all my batteries up again.

So far, I've never had an issue with battery power no matter how long I've stayed out in the field.

Well, I'm planning a feature shoot using 2 cameras, out in the wilderness with no electricity. I'm wondering if there's a way to use a car battery (much cheaper than buying a boatload of DVX100a batteries) to power a camera. Anybody?

All I know is I'm constantly trying to lighten the weight of the gear I take out in the backcountry.
There's no way I'd be lugging a car battery around! :)

Understandable. We'll be working in a fairly small geographic area -- not a whole lot of moving around from place to place. At least, not long distances. The whole work area will be around 28 acres tops. We just need plenty of power to run the cameras. If we were hiking or backpacking, it would be completely different.

Here's an item from Radio Shack...

Looks like it has a 7.5 volt setting. I could solder wires and clamps to clamp to the posts on a car battery. Then solder a jack on the other end that would accept the plug from the DVX100a's power cable. Connect it all up, and it should work. Right?

Yes it is with the addition of some small electronics. I use my DVX with a 12V sealed lead acid battery (bit smaller then standard car but much safer as no leak-able battery liquid) and made a small piece of electronics that down steps the DC voltage from 12V to a regulated 8.4V (i think) with a current capacity of about 1.5A, plenty of juice to run the DVX. The best thing about the electronics is it uses a variable Cap so you can adjust the output voltage to whatever you like using a voltmeter. I will find the bits and upload a pic with components etc...

The BESCOR BECLCD120 12 V cable for DVX has such electronics inside the "batt compartment" end attaching to the camera

Does this charge the batts in the car or does it only power the cam?

bilgami, if you are refering to the Bescor 12 V cable, it only powers the camera. It has a 12 V lighter type plug on one end and a DVX battery case on the other end. B&H used to sell a "Power2000 Turbo Charger QP-8700" that included a 12 V car cable, but I can't seem to find it on B&H's site right now.

Sounds like a great device! Wish I had the skills to build one. Thanks for the info!
