Relinking to Highest Resolution

If I bring in P2 media as DVCProHD, and transcode all of it to
an offline resolution for fear of running out of space,
How do I relink to the original P2 media?

I've read through the documentation and I see that it suggests
"relinking" to highest quality, but doesn't that assume that I'm
going to keep the original media as well as the transcoded media
on my drives. I might be missing something, but that doesn't seem
like a space saver to me.

Here's my workflow (I think). P2 media on firewire drive...
clips to bin...import media...then transcode that media from
DVCProHD to an offline resolution.

I would think at this point I could toss the DVCProHD imported stuff,
work with the transcoded files and after the cut is approved "relink"
in some way to the P2 folder in some way.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much.

Transcoding to an offline resolution isn't necessarily meant to save space.

The workflow you described is the one you would use. Are you not keeping a backup of the original P2 files?

If you are, you could go through your workflow, editing in an offline resolution, having deleted the high def files out of the MXF folder, then, after your edit is done, delete the low res media (not the clips, obviously), and then relink.

Not sure if this makes sense.

Thanks for the reply.

I guess where i get tripped up is the notion of "relinking" to the P2 backup media.

Once clips and media are imported to my workstations drives, obviously they live
as mxf media associated with the media database.

But can I really relink so to speak to the P2 folder on the backup? Or...

should I transcode media that has been imported..

delete hi-res after I transcode...

edit...

then open new project

import clips to bin from backup media (without importing media so that MC is just seeing the Hi-Res
on the backup)..

bring the approved sequence into that project

and then relink?

Thanks

Basicly.

What I would probably do in your situation:
Just import the clips (not the media)
Transcode to your SD res from there.
Do your edit
Use mediatool to trash the SD media.
Manually copy the MXF files from the P2 backups into the MXF/1 folder
Relink

You don't need to create seperate projects. You can use the drop menu under the Format tab to switch from HD to SD. Bringing the clips in again in another project won't change where the original sequence is looking for its media.

If after this, you are short on space, you can always consolidate your finished sequence, and delete the unused media.

By the way, did you shoot in 1080 or 720? That could cause you some problems.

Thanks for the reply.

Got it on the format tab. I was just hoping there'd be a method
by which I could basically do the transcode and not have to
copy any HD media into the MXF folder on my drives.

I thought if perhaps I did the edit with the SD transcodes (like you said,
not importing the media, but doing the SD transcode, and leaving the HD
on the backup)

that I could perhaps just open a new project import those HD clips again,
bring in the approved sequence into that new project, then link it to
the imported clips without having to import the media from the backup disk.

It's 1080i. Thanks and hope you don't mind if I pester you with a few more
questions as they arise.

Not at all. Pester me all you want.

I don't believe that the workflow you want to do would work. As far as I know, you can't relink a sequence to new clips, just new media.

The reason I asked about 720 v 1080, is that 720 has a hard time dropping down to SD. I've never really been sure why, but I think it's due to the true progressive framerate. Maybe someone who knows more than I will explain it to me one day.

Thanks a lot, Gordon.

I think I've got it. Mind if I outline it and run it by you?

1. get Firewire backups of P2 material. (1080 24p in this case)

2. "Import clips to bin"

3. Switch format to 24p NTSC project.

4. Transcode the clips to offline res.

5. Edit with "new" transcoded clips.

6. Get it approved.

7. Switch format to 1080 24p project.

8. delete offline res material

9. import HD material from P2 backup

10. relink approved sequence with that newly imported material

11. output as file for color correction.

Make sense?

Yeah. That sounds right to me.

Then, between 10 and 11, if you need to free up space, you could consolidate the sequence with say, 60 frame handles, and trash the rest.

Missing step after deleting from the Media Tool?

Missing step after deleting from the Media Tool?

So I followed the steps up to deleting the file in the Media Tool, then I manually copy the files into the MXF/1 folder I get an error saying no clips to relink.
