"ReLife" coming soon...

Back in December my friend and I embarked on quite a journey. "ReLife" is a 15 to 20 minute short film from Beyond Reality Pictures, intended for submission into festivals nationwide this coming Summer and Fall, done in the mood of a Twilight Zone episode. What starts out as almost a road movie, quickly turns into a dark and mysterious supernatural story that'll leave audiences intrigued and amused. The official synopsis the writer came up with is, "On a long dive home from a business conference, John (Anthony Misiano) picks up a drifter (Justin Chancler) heading South, as a way to pass the time. During the drive the drifter becomes unusually concerned about the life path John has chosen, and decides to change him, forever..."

We shot it for the most part on location in the Anza Borrego desert in just two days, and two more days in a domestic residence where the story ends. We JUST started editing it, but so far are pretty happy with the results. Much of the film takes place in a car, with the camera mounted ON the car as we drove down the desert highway (scary, I know), and of course to eliminate glare and see THROUGH the windshield we used a polarized filter. Strange thing happened because of this though, the polarized tint on my back window created this weird rainbowish purple and green color behind the actors heads. But since the film is supposed to be kind of "other worldly", we think it might work. Although we still aren't concrete on whether or not it will be black and white. It was shot on an original DVX100p, with a 35mm lens adapter, and in a lot of ways was a big learning experience for us. The first time we invested a couple thousand dollars into something, with actual investors. First time we had a cast of professional actors, and a crew (and paid everyone accordingly), and just really the first time we went ALL OUT with something quasi-professional. Below is both the poster, as well as some random screen grabs from the scene we were editing today. Please comment.

So here's the official trailer via myspace:

We've had the movie basically done for a few weeks now (just waiting on a musician to finish up some extra music {what you hear in the trailer is the main theme already finished} and then it'll be done, but, could not think of a trailer for it until this afternoon on the drive home from the DMV it just hit me. Every beat and shot, I managed to put it together in literally like 45 minutes. My goal was sort of 'dark and mysterious', since that IS the overall vibe of the film, and I of course want the trailer to get people interested.

Please comment (here, not myspace) and let me know what your impression was of it. Thanks a lot.

THE FILM IS COMPLETE!!!
We had the premiere party on Saturday the 20th of September, and it went wonderfully. The film was very well received, and we already presold 30 copies of the DVD. DVD sales should help us raise enough to start submitting into festivals. Keep on keepin' on my brothers.

I'd like to post the film online somewhere for people to watch, but where should I? It's about 17 minutes long (keep in mind).

Vimeo, if you can squeeze it in 500MB (for 17 minutes you should use a bitrate between 3500kbps and 4000kbps).

Openfilm.com otherwise.

~THE FILM IS POSTED ON VIMEO~

Because it's 17 minutes long, I converted it to a wmv for the sake of faster loading. Please enjoy and comment, feedback is greatly appreciated, and make sure to stay for the whole thing.
Technical note: Shot on an original DVX100 with a DIY 35mm adapter, with that will come a couple technical shortcomings (I wish I'd had my current rig, ah well), but nevertheless I hope it's enjoyable and engaging. Have fun. Thanks.

i thought it was a great film. I'm curious, what was the look you were going for when the nameless man arrives at the home? with the camera i mean.....why did you decide to go hand held and not lock the camera down on a tripod? but still loved the idea of the film and it was definitely worth watching

Thank you. The thought process in the handheld segment was pretty simple, we just wanted things to feel uneasy and unstable. In retrospect the creepiness may have worked better with consistently smooth shots, but eh, what's done is done.

So it's taken some time, but we're finally getting the DVD's made, and here's the design that'll be printed on the discs.

And this is the design that was use for the case jackets.
