Reign of the Fallen - Short film trailer

best looking, best acted fan film I've seen. Granted I've only seen the trailer but if all 45 minutes lives up to the trailer...then damn.

great job.

Thanks for the kind words.... I hope the full movie lives up to what the trailer promises, and I'm pretty confident it will.... Everyone involved put a lot of work into it.

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to let all who are interested know that we are still working on the DVD and trying to get it all finished up to be mailed out. Unfortunately my previous project did end up being extended so I'm going to say that it might creep into early to mid september at the latest before the DVD's are all completed, but I promise this will not be one of those ever-on-going things that keeps getting pushed back.

Meanwhile, I'm going to be posting new screenshots on the website, actor bios for all who are interested, and hopefully a little 2nd teaser trailer for late august. I also have some behind the scenes photos that I might put up since I got some questions about the lighting set up for the night time duel. The DVD will have lots of cool features so hopefully its worth the wait to everyone.

Looks nice dude!

Great lighting.

Loved the saturated landscapes.

Could never work up the adrenaline / drive to sustain me through making a Fan pick, (other than a cheeseball weekennd parody maybe) but I'd certainly like to watch yours.

I emailed you for a DVD when it be done.

I always wondered, are sound effects copywritten?
YES YES YES

MINOR THREADJACK - PLEASE TO EXCUSE

But you are sort of in the territory of "is that person who walked throught the shot ever gonna see this and sue me for not getting a release?"

They are a little harder to pick out than that Bon Jovi song you're dying to use for your trailer.

They could sue though and they are somebody's creative property.

Best buy for non rights managed "design" library is earshot SFX. its only $99 and has a lot of swooshes to sell motion transitions and tones and things like that. Also has ambient libraries, industrial, sci-fi, office, cars, animals etc. It's not as extensive as the BBC library or Hollywood Edge which is like 7 gigs, but is a good buy for the price and has the cool "design" sounds that those others don't. Then you can steal all your creaking doors etc. Hollywood Edge is an extensive non rights managed library that's great but expensive.

Am I the only person that just freakin hates "Fan Films" ...

to me, it is just ridiculous... and a mooch off of someone else's idea... You said it was originally going to be a samurai tale... that would have been far more interesting...

Well, normally I would agree...HOWEVER...

From a filmaking perspective I feel I should defend this choice.

In this specific universe (Star Wars) it makes it easier for a low budget filmaker to create a "Samurai" like tale. You don't have to build sets based on Japanese architecture. You can set it in locales outside of a Japanese landscape. Also, you can cast based on available talent, and not based on available ethnicity.

Setting it in the Star Wars universe opens up the door for a filmaker to tell this kind of story.

Besides it appears that they are distancing themselves from hardcore established mythology of the Star Wars universe, and hell I'm kind of biased. I love star wars, I'm kind of a sucker for SW fan films, and this one looks alot more polished than most.

I like the idea of "fan films" because the creators aren't making it for money. The goal with these films is simply to fufill a fantasy. This film seems to have a more solid story than Eps 1-3. I also like how it is set in a fantasy universe with a seemingly natural human story.

any way you look at it, Lucas gave up the right to have no one make a fan film off of his creation because the new ones were such a let down...

Just once I would like to see a Star Wars Fan Film that does not have Jedi's in it. I love the Star Wars Universe but damn if the Jedi Tales are not overkill/been there/done that.

And why do they all have really bad english accents?

But.............

For what it's worth:

Technically; this looks really nice with some good attention to detail. The Cinematography appears above average and the trailer is a nice tight edit.
I will give you this much; this looks like it could have been filmed on Tatooine instead of the neighborhood woods like most of these films.

But can't someone do a Star Wars that doesnt have a Jedi torn between dark and light? Anyone?

Back 'atcha

Course is hasnt been finished in years.

You would be correct, except George Lucas has blessed fan films as long as they make no money from it. So, if they're not making money there are no copyright issues with anything Star Wars related including the sounds.

That's cool to know. I was just repsonding generally. And generally no one will sweat you, or you'll just get a cease and desist order (which still sucks if you burned a bunch of DVD's), as long as you are not making money. But in those instances it is technically still illegal unlike with $tar War$.

You're right sound effects are copyritten. The only catch is, many sounds are so drastically altered and layered that actually figuring out the base sounds is usually imposible. I have done quite a bit of sound design, and I can tell you that copyright infringement is at the most frowned upon, certainly nothing like video or music. I dunno why, but it is. I can take a sound from the Lucas Sound Library, and after doctoring and blending, have something that is completely unrecognizable from the original base sound(s).

Sound design is funner than a lot of people think, and in many ways, more important than video.

Yeah I teach sound design for film and theatre at university level, and I tell my students that no one will care what they use for campus productions, and probably not until it is like big broadway time will people even care -- I board opped a tone of high profile, even pulitzer prize winning off broadway and commercial off broadway shows -- like How I Learned to Drive which relies on classic and oldies rock heavily, and nobody got permission for that, but when people ask you have to tell them that while no one will care for certain applications, that it is illegal -- irresponsible to do othrwise, kind of like if your friend asks you if he can park in the laundromat parking lot next to your apartment or if he will get towed. Now the fact may be that you or your friends parked their a hundred times and never got towed, but do you want to be the guy that says its no big deal and then have him get towed? No. So I tell my students what the reality of the situation is - that probably no one will care depending on their project, that I do it all the time, and that it is illegal. Which is what I'm getting at here.

To quote the-lyons-den.com from a previous post:

did the "Clips" section really need another form-style news post about this? I don't see a new clip on the dvds shipping or something here...

Congrats on getting your DVDs made but come on here guys..

Tibby you're a dick.

Keyword that is still eluding you: "another". I am sure that duplicated thread will be moved to the "News" section if a mod comes across it.

My comment here is relevant, and yours is um...

Now then, can we return to the subject at hand here? Sorry everyone.

Must've touched a nerve. Here's some words eluding you sir "irony" and "hypocrisy"

I merely found it amusing that you would rag on someone else for posting an update on their DVD in the "Screen Grabs/Clips of footage" forum and then ask someone else for an update on their DVD in the same exact forum (Different thread maybe, but come on...).

Wasn't really trying to flame you, but if you want to turn it that way, thats up to you.

As far as me being a dick, well I've been called worse.

On to the topic at hand, yeah an update on "Reign of the Fallen" would be nice. Oh, wait a minute...there was an update on August 15th...

Hey everyone,

I realize its been awhile and I apologize, so let me give everyone the rundown. After screening the movie, I decided I wanted to beef up the story and the action, so we've been doing additional shooting that also involves some tricky effects work. I'm happy to announce that all additional shooting is complete now and the effects are just about done. I expect to have this new cut of the film done this weekend. It will run approximately 63 minutes.

So here is my question... im going to have this cut of the film im happy with done, but the special features i talked about are not. would everyone rather just get the movie, maybe with commentary on it sooner? or would it be worth the wait to you to get the special features done also? i dont want to break my back over it if no one cares about the behind the scenes stuff.

Let me know,
Dave

PS if anyone lives near the NY/NJ area, we will be showing the film again in Glen Ridge, NJ at a thing called Culturefest on October 22nd.
