Reign of the Fallen - Short film trailer

running commentary: funny preview screen...good music (original i hope?)...like the mountain top shots...good sound until old guy talks! oops...liking the overall look and feel of the piece, nice work...shot in the rain of the two guys standing off looks "fake"...nice work.

wow guys i have to say really nice work on the trailer. i am just hoping you dont have that old dood doing CGI'd backflips or anything in the movie, otherwise this looks QUITE promising. good job, just keep that sound consistent on your talent. congrats as well on your premiere!

Am I the only person that just freakin hates "Fan Films" ...

to me, it is just ridiculous... and a mooch off of someone else's idea... You said it was originally going to be a samurai tale... that would have been far more interesting... for me anyways..

I can't say I hate the film since I haven't seen it.. but nothing about it makes me really want to see it... knowing it is a SW fan film really turns me off..

Technically the footage looks really great. What I was able to discern from the trailer in terms of mood felt good..

though the Audio was a weak point.

It looks promising.. but I just can't get past the use of Jedi in place of a real story. SW has been done already... 6 movies... let it be..

Hey,

Thanks for the critiques... The audio actually sounded great at the premiere, and that one line that everyone points out as bad quality is actually dubbed in the movie. I chose star wars for a few reasons.... 1.) I dont like how GL was doing the prequels particularly, even though its his baby. 2.) It would give it a fairly wide audience to get feedback from... 3) it automatically incorporated a lot of things I wanted to try as an experiment, and 4.) Ive never seen a fan film that focused on anything except fight choreography and CGI, and I wanted to try to bring something interesting to that community.

It's cool that you dont like it, and I wont be doing any more projects like this, but it was a fun time and I always wanted to do a lightsaber fight... how else am I going to do it? :)

And who knows... Maybe I'll save the samurai flick for when I have funding for a feature to do it right.

Did you use keylight for the greenscreen shots? Any chance we could get some pics of your setup?

Believe it or not there arent any green screen shots in the movie. I did shoot a few, but none of them made it into the final cut. When necessary i rotoscoped by hand. I have a few wide pics of my set up for the night exteriors that I will post on my site soon. Ill drop a note in here when I put them up for anyone who cares to look.

BTW ninja, nice depth of field you have in yur trailer and screenshots. How did you pull it off?

Hey Kyledroid,

Whenever possible I just moved the actors away from their backgrounds, pulled the camera backed and shot everything long. The longness of the lense makes the backgrounds look closer again, but they're out of focus as well. Worked great in the exteriors because the backgrounds could be hundreds of yards away and i could get shallow depth of field in a medium shot. Also used the ND filter and opened up the iris all the way... Same as any of the DOF tutorials you'll find on the net.

Hey, I just saw your trailer. It's really impressive in terms of photography. Nice lighting, Can you tell us a little about the color grading/color correction use to achieve the looks?

I'd like to be on your list for the dvd. Good luck with the movie!

Hey Hiro,

Thanks... As far as color grading goes, I did almost all of it in premiere pro 1.5... I played a lot with the RGB pedestal, the brightness and contrast levels of the midtones and shadows, as well as overall tint. No real special tricks..just played with it till i thought it looked okay.

I think you trailer looks pretty damn good. Where did you get your laser sword sounds?

Hey Brad,

I found them all over the net. They're largely ripped from video games and recorded from the movies, from what I can tell. There's a pretty large community of people making star wars oriented fan films and they've collected a good size library of sound effects.

Hey Everyone,

We've just completed a short Star Wars film of sorts as a practice project and we've posted the trailer online. The finished film is about 45 minutes long and will be available online soon as well. It was shot all on the dvx and a lot of it was accomplished with knowledge accumulated through this website. Hope you enjoy.

You can view it at www.dtllc.net
It looks great! How do I get a copy?

I can see the Lines now; check the timeline at

Is it this new QT Codec? I looked at some of my files and do not see it. What is it?

Now PK has me looking for Horizontal Lines everywhere.

Its not the new codec, its from the previous version. If I'm seeing what youre seeing, its not from the quicktime... It looks like its from the mini DV compression, or maybe I dont know what I'm talking about. The mini DV artifacts look like cross hatches, not just horizontal lines.

best looking, best acted fan film I've seen. Granted I've only seen the trailer but if all 45 minutes lives up to the trailer...then damn.

great job.
