Regrettable GH1 Purchase

I just boxed up my Sony VG10 and sent it back to Sony. Why? Because I read abouth the GH1 Hack only to the point that I was excited about it. After it arrived today and I tried to do the hack did I see that mine is unhackable at the moment.

I already own the NEX-5 which is limited as well. But at least the VG10 put out some amazing video at a bit rate of 24.

I guess I'll get the VG10 again.

You must have been reading up elsewhere, cuz there was plenty of information on dvxuser stating the new gh1's were unhackable. sorry for ya, maybe I'll sell you mine, I was thinking of going to a 60D.

was gonna say. plenty of info on gh1's being unable to hack. gotta check those serial numbers to be definite now days.

Well...it's more that I took a chance on getting one pre-dating June than not fully being aware of the non-hackable firmware revision. No problem. It's boxed up and ready to ship back to Adorama. With the hack....it would have been more of what was needed than the VG10. Without the hack, it's lacking the IQ of the VG10.

Bummer....hopefully, a similar hack for the VG10 will exist.

I called Adorama to start the return process. I told the sales guy I needed a "older stock" gh1. I told him the older GH1 has features "available" that the new ones don't. He said they wouldn't look for me. If they did, I would maintain the order along with my Sony VG10 that's coming. But, such is life.

i really think this is where small shops shine. ask them and they are more likely to do something like check the serial for you as a sale is good for them. for a large internet company, they really wont care as they'll sell it anyhows.

so it's an extra couple of bucks, saves the disappointment and the postage back to the internet giant.

Got one for sale if you are interested.

Why would anybody buy a GH1 at this time when the GH2 is around the corner? Oh sure you were supposed to be able to hack it to a higher bit rate, but with it comes the added headaches of card speed, freezing, etc. Not to mention the hacked native 24p supposed problems. The GH2 has a brand new sensor, up to 24mbits, and native 24p. That's the camera to get.

In the return, I put a note to Adorama and asked if they would look for an older stock serial number. If they find one, good, if not, no big deal. My VG10 is on it's way so...I'll be working on the firmware for it.

Other than the enhanced IQ with the firmware hack, I had no interest in the Lumix at all. For video, I'll stick with the VG10 and hope for a firmware that will offer progressive modes. The stills are pretty good as well although, having once had the 5D M2, I'll probably end up with the Canon 1D Mark lV. I will buy a hackable Lumix if the opportunity arises.
