Register a domain Vs. Hosting

I've heard that you should register your domain name separately from signing up with a hosting service. Do you agree? and why? While researching setting up a website I've seen lots of offers for free domain names when you sign up. Why would this be something to avoid?

My advice is to avoid smaller ISPs for your hosting. I wouldn't wish having to migrate an entire site from an ISP that calls it quits on just about anyone. Okay... I can think of a few.

:)

At any rate, I feel that bigger is better. NSI is the grand-daddy of domain registry sites, but the renewal fees and forwarding fees are astronomical. Instead...

I use Yahoo small business for everything - except for .TV extensions which we buy for all of our development properties. Those are only available through a select few providers and are very expensive.

If you wanted to buy an integrated domain / mail and hosting package through someone like Yahoo!, I'd recommend it except for very complicated sites (like remote server / application access) and so on.

I like having complete control over my domain, so I register it separately. But that's just me. I have bad memories from an experience with a smaller ISP a long time ago and now I just don't do it that way anymore.

Anyone have experience with LunarPages or HostMonster? They both seem to have pretty good online presence and reviews. What about rebates - are they scams?? I see there are rebate pages making the hosting VERY cheap.

i'm looking for a new place to host my site as well. anyone have any experience with godaddy?

We've bought a few .TV domains through them and forwarding to a separate hosting service is a cinch.

i switched from a small crappy company (one.com) to a large established company (1and1.com). it was a very good decision.

the only thing I'd be careful with is "free" offers - they are never free. as long as you read the disclaimers properly you shouldn't have any problems. as long as it's a good established company it doesn't really matter if you register your name with them or separately.

I've been VERY happy with my 1and1.com account. I've been using it for about a year for my personal site and 2 years for a site I admin. A good friend of mine has been using them for about 5 years now, and is also very happy.

They are very powerfull and flexible. PHP, MSQL, etc.. I get 50GB of space, and 2500GB of bandwidth/Qtr. plus a whole host of advanced features and absoloutly fantastice web stats. Plus 2 included domains (with lots of control over them) and a boatload of e-mail accounts and subdomains. I pay $5/month. They have accounts both cheaper and more expensive, all with a great range of features.

Most of DramaFest was served from 1and1 servers, without any trouble. During HorrorFest, my 1and1 account was the only server that didn't go down. It was also the only 1and1 server in use for the fest.
I also host full copies of most of the RED footage and images, plus various other notable media libraries, from my 1and1 account. Almost 26,000 files served this year alone, with most of them between 20MB and 100MB in size.
And I've hardly made a dent in my account usage, and never seen a slowdown of performance.

Ok, that sounds like a sales pitch, doesn't it? I'm just a very happy customer, that's all. :)

I'll have to second Mikko's opinion. I've been using them for several years now and I have nothing but good to say about them, and, amazingly, as big as they are if you call the 1-800 number, you can always get help.

I have about 50 domains at godaddy and about 10 at namecheap.com both places have been great for the last 5 years.

If i did not run my own servers, i would probably be using 1and1.com, dreamhost, or mediatemple.com but i go crazy without ROOT access. :kali:

* Whatever you do, DON'T USE Globat.

OMG Globat is so annoying.I bought a website template and it came with free hosting from globat so I checked the reviews and it didn't seem to good so I didn't act on the free offer. Well every couple of weeks to a month I get an e-mail stating that I still haven't used my free offer and that's why I won't use them because if they really were offering a good service they wouldn't be hounding me.

This looks the same as Host Monster. Unfortunately I tried to navigate thru the "site builder" and couldn't get anywhere. I don't have any website experience but I am pretty computer savvy and I couldn't get anything to work. I'm on a Mac. Maybe it's not mac friendly?? I think I need a more user friendly (dummy) site to build my pages or I'll end up overpaying for the convenience at dot mac.

You run your own servers? lol

Hey, are you back in town already?

I like GoDaddy simply because of the excellent customer service. I used to have my domain and hosting through a major operator, I won't mention the name (okay, it was Yahoo!).

Everything was peachy until one day my email stopped functioning. I sent five or six emails to tech support (not using my broken email but their web response form), with no reply. After a week, nothing. I finally decided to call them. It took about 30 minutes of searching the web before I could find a number to call, and when I finally reached them, the service rep told me "Oh yeah, we've been experiencing some issues with email." I'm like "No kidding, people who are sending me email messages are getting them as undeliverable." She told me they were working on it but had no estimate for it to be up and working. After a week of being cut off from email I had had enough.

GoDaddy makes a big deal out of advertising their customer service. One thing that impressed me was that they post their sales and tech support phone numbers right at the top of their main site page. I've called them a couple of times with issues and found them to be courteous and knowledgable.

pair and pairNIC for me, hosting and registration, since 1999 or so.

Not cheap.

But zero problems with them. Ever.
