Regions-free dvd players

Does anybody have any recommendations for an inexpensive, regions-free dvd player?

There are a couple of foreign films (pal 2) I may be purchasing. These films do not appear to be coming out in the U.S. anytime soon-they've been out about 3 years overseas.

Our DVD player (that I bought a few years ago) is universal transcoding region free player. It'll play NTSC or PAL discs from any region and transcode the output to NTSC or PAL (whichever you choose) regardless of the disc.

It will quite literally play anything...

... except DVD+/-R's :nads: D'oh! Useless.

I have an old APEX that I got for somewhere around 30 dollars years ago.
I was able to hack the firmware to make it region free.
(with the help of message boards, what else?)
:)

Of course, that was before there were region free players easily available.
(which hopefully there are now)

This is where I purchased mine several years ago:

I purchased a "sampo"...back then it was pretty much the least expensive choice...and it worked fine...played mp3 as well as dvd and -r...never tried +r...although occasionally I would have some trouble with the odd dvd-r skipping.

There are many more choices now...different brands such as toshiba, pioneer, upconverting, progressive...

My only experience with the company was the one unit...and it arrived when it was supposed to...

Thanks for the replies guys. Gotta start putting some pennies away-fortunately the players aren't unreasonably expensive!
