Refurb Questions

I got a refurb/demo with full JVC warranty from B&H and I'm looking for some info and advice...

1) Any way to read the serial number to know when it was produced? The serial number is 16031XXX (the Xs are other digits. Any reason not to post a serial number?) I'd prefer to a camera of recent vintage rather than one of the early ones.

2) It has the "A" sticker affixed. Do new models come with the A stickers or does that mean it was sent back for a firmware upgrade?

3) When I opened the box, I could hear a screw rattling around in the camera (a confidence shaking moment.) I powered up the camera to open the tape cover, shook it around a bit and a black screw fell out. I don't see any screws missing from the outside of the case.

Is a loose screw floating around a good reason to return the camera? What would you do? The deal on the refurb was okay but not great. I'm leaning toward getting a fresh one.

thanks.

A missing screw is never good, but how does the camera look and perform?

If all is good, then the money might be better spent towards a Firestore or a Matte Box.

For me though, the only thing used I buy are Video Games and Relic Bass Equipment.

I remember reading they place the A sticker on it after it is upgraded at the factory. As far as vintage, how old could it be? I can't imagine anything sitting on the shelf too long at a high sales volume store like b H Photo. Did you check for the split screen? The extra screw bothers me a little. I'd keep it, and if you believe you're going to hang on to the camera a while, put your mind at ease by buying an extended warranty. (The 4 year one seemed like a good deal, but everytime I buy a warranty and my product doesn't break, I get upset.)
