Reformatting P2 cards in P2 Viewer

Hi all, I'm new to this site but you all seem knowledgeable so I'm hoping you can help me out...I am attempting to format my P2 cards in my PC laptop using the P2 Viewer. I'm going to TOOLS>PROPERTY SETTINGS and after highlighting the drive designated for the card I hit the format button. It asks if i'm sure about this decision, i confirm that i am. Then an I/O error appears.
What am i doing wrong?

Do you have the write protection switch set to orange?

In any case, you can just right-click on the card in Windows Explorer and choose Format -- no fuss, no muss.
 
The write protection switch is off or set to black.

Haven't formatted the cards outside of the P2 Viewer yet so I will give it a try in Explorer. Thanks so much for the info. Sounds much easier than the way I've been doing it.
