Reel-Stream Andromeda: Record 4:4:4 36-bit Uncompressed on your DVX

To answer your questions:

We will be in the 21st Century 3D booth, SU9969 at NAB.

I have not tried an Andromeda DVX with the mini35, I can't wait to try it either!

About the linear vs logarithmic...you're right, our eyes see logarithmicaly but CCD's are linear, which is why the resulting digitized data is linear as well. Using log mode allows for a smaller data rate while still mantaining the important visual information by using less bits to represent color. I have tested this down to 8-bit log and the resulting image looks no different to the eye than a 12-bit linear image. When you really start pushing the levels for color correction, that's when it might show up.

Cheers,
Juan

Okay, I'll take the walk of shame. I did go by the 21st Century 3D booth, but I didn't notice the Andromeda and got caught up in the cool 3D dual DVX setup. It works too! Very neat. I'll have to check tommorow. Sorry reservoir. The new JVC camera and the HVX200 look great though and I got to play with the Varicam! My info on the Andromeda will have to wait.

Juan,

What are your thoughts on what 'thisiswells' posted stating "there are currently only two monitors on the market that will display a 4:4:4 RGB image natively."

"The Sony is $40,000.00 and the Barco is $47,000.00"

Is that not accurate? Please advise.

~Shawn

Here's an update on what went on during NAB:

We showed the final form of Andromeda, together with uncompressed HD clips which where shot together with DV footage on the same camera for comparison.

The reason why you probably missed Andromeda is because the final form contains the device entirely inside the DVX100, with only a tiny USB2.0 mini plug exposed on one side. This means that all accessories which the DVX usually accepts can be used, and the device does not take power from the camera, but the USB bus instead.

We will be posting an update to the website with pictures on tuesday or wednesday.

In the meantime, let me know if you have any questions. We got a LOT of people, and the most shocking improvement over the normal DVX footage seemed to be the increase in dynamic range. We had several DP's test it, and they all agreed, about 2-3 stops of additional dynamic range compared to the standard DVX output. This puts it up there with the digital big guns in terms of dynamic range.

Cheers,
Juan

If they are CRT monitors then they can't be doing full HD rez. I'm using a dual link Decklink card with a dual link HDLink to a 23" cinema display for full 1080p 4:4:4 work.
