Reducing Movie File Size for Download online

I have a full length movie (4.7 GB) that I am putting online for download to buy. Obviously, a lot of people aren't going to have the patience to spend hours and hours downloading a large file movie. I'm using Final Cut Pro, but unfortunately, Compressor is not working, i.e. out of commission. That being said, I need to work with FCP (I have version 6) and export it at a lower file size, but I am worried about sacrificing too much quality. I understand there is a give and take, but I don't know how to bring the file size down without ridiculous sacrifice.

Can anyone please tell me how I can get the best quality movie file at the lowest possible file size. Any help would be EXTREMELY helpful!!

Thanks!

Can you describe the problem?

Will Compressor launch? Are you able to at least drop in a file and set the compression information?

Compressor is your best bet. FCP's conversion isn't nearly as stable and won't give you decent results... aside from the fact that you'll have a couple days' worth of render/export time through FCP. So if we can get Compressor running, you'll be good to go.

I can open compressor, drop the movie in, set the marks I need, but then it says there is an error and unable to move further...
