Why is nobody talking about this?!

Assuming it works as they say, this is sooooooo cool! I've been on Shane Hurlbut's blog, and one of his posts talks about focus control. http://hurlbutvisuals.com/blog/2010/02/12/the-power-of-focus/ And he's using setups that cost $25K+ that do half of what the microRemote is claiming.

Potential for autofocus (however limited it may be), lens configuration banks, software control, and soooo much more.

Count me excited!

It is awesome

Software is the king of this stuff and an open source database of lenses is great

Two reasons I wont be buying (I imagine)

1) you can control focus by turning the lens barrel for $0

2) In built lens motors on canon, software control , and maybe a pelicle mirror body (could be cheaper than the whole rig) could make it all redundant

I note this on canon rumours..

"- Added code for upcoming remotes, accessories and lenses" on a 7d firmware upgrade

If you watch the canon interview wither on C5d or maybe FreshDV (I cant remember) they are well aware of what they have - 'a unique position, sensors through to lenses' and are obviously battling to move it all forward

Frankly I think we are six months away from..
$100 distance sensor on camera top
software interface to canon lenses
Ipod app running it all through the touch screen
$500 total ?

I get your point, but I'm thinking about my Zeiss ZF lenses on my 5D...or even potentially an AF100. Electronic control isn't an option.

I like the potential for limited auto focus with this. Plus setting in and out points, storing lens data, and so much more.

If it's around $3K for the whole getup, I'm there. *Redrock: Just don't bump the price up another 30% before I can buy it!

Im not so sure on the full cost - I think it will creep up

The app based system I suggest could have in/out moves and all the rest built in

Dont get me wrong - if someone gave me this tomorrow I would put it on my camera in seconds it looks great and for someone earning the right bucks it would pay itself befroe newer is out

I just think it is a little hardware heavy

This is probably the greatest thing since sliced bread! Good bye preston and bartech, hello redrock!

Would it be cool if the system interfaced through software or the usb port on the canon cameras/lenses? Yes.

Would it be cool to only have your expensive follow focus work on canon cameras/lenses though. So so not cool. These cameras might be the "It" thing this year... but next year everyone might switch to that new panasonic or the sony, or who knows what. No one wants obsolete gear (at least I don't).

Morgan, it sounds like for YOUR application a wireless follow focus would not be ideal.

For anyone who does 1st AC work, this seems like a dream come true and career changer (good and bad maybe?).

A software based system is the kind of innovation cameras and their accessories need. This WILL revolutionize the way things are made going forward. With the HDSLR's, this new follow focus, and a slew of other things to come, this is probably the MOST exciting time to be a filmmaker!

Here's to hoping for a camera/accessories that can fold up into the size of wallet in 2011! :cheesy:

Not at all - Id love a WirlessFF - Isolation = stabilisation

Ive been 1mm from buying a HocusFocus - mainly I dint purchase because I was confused over funciontality for short throw lenses

I just think in a world of face recognition software we are but months away from some software based solution with minimal hardware

Tis a good point about moving to other cameras

Ill tell you a sad truth about my stills photography - I have a heap of 'classic' glass but pick the green light of a nikon AF lens any day it just gives a professional reliability and certainty to ones shooting

Checked it out. Pretty damn cool, I must say. Redrock says "summer" but then again I remember the original inception of this device from 2007 that was never released. This looks much closer to production, however.

Just got my e-mail confirmation saying that I'm on the reserve list. This still looks very promising, given that the cost is reasonable...$2500ish?

Looks like the "brains" are all based on an iPhone app. At first it seems a little hokey. But, if it all works the right way, I think it's a great way to keep costs down.
