RedRock Mattebox videos

Andrew has just confirmed on the redrock forum that the matteboxes have started going out the door, after the last delay.

Reservation holders' orders are shipping between he 16th and 21st.

:-D

Wow, 140mm! That IS a big matte box. My Chrosziel matte boxes are 110mm.
At least there shouldn't be any vignetting issues with a 4.5mm ENG wide angle,
but since most of the cameras being used will be palmcorders, I think it's funny
that Red Rock opted to copy an Arri cine matte box.

what Red Rock is doing is positioning themselves for a stake at hollywood. Right now many of us are nobodies, but as we grow and develop we'll become the next set of filmmakers. And as we DO THAT most of us will opt to stay with the products we've used before especially if they are cheaper and comparable to hollywood standard.

The future is us - indies. Red Rock is very smart in their positon. Look at How Peter Jackson and Steven Soderburg are now doing more indie type projects, using equipment right at or slightly above the indie level. Soderburg has even talked about the last hurdle is getting rid of distribution companies and allowing filmmakers to access the audience directly.

This is a good move for Red Rock and I'm proud of them. Many other companies should respect and take the same approach.

Guys, the microMattebox is an original design. The feature set is comparable to an Arri but once you've gotten your hands on the Redrock you'll see they are very different.

Jls, you make us sound ambitious! What matters most to us is making great gear available to everyone. Maybe one day we'll be one of the bigwigs. Who knows?

Anyhoo, back to work for me.

Well I think it's a great move. Independent Cinema has the potential to do great things. Many companies have benefited from looking beyond the Hollywood/corporate model to only create expensive items for Large Companies. Making things cheaper and efficent shows progress. The type of progress this country needs - (but don't let me get started on that tangent.)

I've been very disappointed in many companies who have done great product in the past, only to quickly raise rates as soon as they get one leg up forgetting the very community that got them their start. So Cudos to RedRock!

I ordered one for rental inventory. It seems to do everything needed, just need
step downs to 100mm and 85mm for my Fujinon ENG zooms. Are these sizes
available Andrew? Have you tried the matte box with Fuji or Canon 4.5mm wide
angle 2/3" zoom lenses? Thank you!

Hi Dino,

The mattebox has a 140mm back opening, and it comes with a number of different sized neoprene 'donuts', which can also be cut to a specific size. So any lens that has a front element equal or less than 140mm will fit.

Cheers!

Take a DVD Box (or a similar sheet of plastic) and cut a 4 x 4 frame for your filters.

Frank

Sorry, Frank- just caught this. Good call there, I was already going out to the woodshop to make a bottom flag (these DIY projects keep me sane.) The P series filters are just a hair away from vignetting on a DVX and they definitely do on an HVX, so I think I'll finally need to invest in a set of proper filters. But since I have plenty of horrible DVDs laying around I'll give it a shot.

Mm I think its abit of an injustice to stick bits of DVD case inside the RRMB. it holds 4x4 filters as standard, and it comes with 4x4 masks.

Looks like the ship date's been pushed again. The last delay had reservation holder units (like mine) shipping no later than the 21st (today), which was a week or so later than the previously "99% guaranteed" date, but now their site says "completed" by the 26th, which of course is a Saturday...

Looks like another week at least.

This has really gotten ridiculous...

Hi Ted,

We shipped the last of our golden ticket orders yesterday and are working our way through reservation holders as we speak. Our current estimates at http://www.redrockmicro.com/micromb_shipping.html are still accurate. We expect to be done with reservation holders by the 25th.

Our goal has always been to get a quality mattebox out and they are shipping now!

Cheers!

hoarp001 is correct - 4x4 masks are already included in with the microMatteBox for blocking the light around 4x4 filters within our dual purpose filter trays. I have a few cokin filters here so I'll have to see how well they fit

Ted, I appreciate that you are anxious to get your mattebox, but I think your comment is a little misleading.

As Drew mentioned, we have already started shipping. We are shipping now. The only variable is how many we can ship per day. We were one day ahead of completing shipments to the golden ticket holders, based on our last update. Hopefully we will be ahead of our dates for the reservation holders as well.

We update the page Drew mentioned below daily to let everyone know the latest details.

Thanks

Brian

Ted, I appreciate that you are anxious to get your mattebox, but I think your comment is a little misleading.

What's misleading about noting that a "shipped by the 21st" promise became a "by the 26th"...on the 21st? After countless previous delays...

That's a fact, Brian.

But hey...don't get me wrong...I'm really not all that exercised about it. I'll get my mattebox quite soon I'm sure, and I have every reason to expect that I'll be delighted with it.

But the delays have been very numerous and in the aggregate very substantial, and generally rather lightly disclaimed. I had some of the same feelings regarding the handling of my follow focus order and subsequent gearbox replacement. I should add however that I am very satisfied with it now that the hassles are over. The product is great...

I've purchased a lot of gear from small, 'boutique" companies like RedRock, in video, audio and musical instrument areas, and one of the defining things about these companies for me has always been about outstanding, highly personal customer service. I run a small recording business myself and know very well what's at stake where that's concerned.

It's my sense that RR is no larger than most of these companies, but customer service, at least in my experience so far, has generally been handled in a disappointingly lax, impersonal, "big company-like" style, if you will.

I should add that I do appreciate you and Andrew coming on this board to discuss these issues, as you do on your own forum. I hope my comments are taken in the constructive spirit in which they're intended.

Hi Ted

Clearly there have been a lot of delays. I don't know what we have done to have you consider that we've taken them "lightly". We have all been working countless hours for months. As a new product release it's fraught with unexpected things that create delays. We've had more than our fair share on this one. I don't know how we could more clearly state that the dates are subject to change. If you consider a new product release with attendant "dates are subject to change" and when they change to be misleading, well then I don't have a lot more to offer here. We publish the most accurate dates we have at the time we publish them.

And as we've talked about on these threads before, we've had email issues that we are still resolving for a small number of people that for some reason just don't receive our emails. An automated response just let's people know we've received your email.

All in all, I do appreciate that you take the time to give us feedback, and we're willing to accept that the delays were more than we or anyone had hoped for. We do take customer service very seriously, and when issues are brought to our attention we work to resolve them quickly. I have always publicly stated on this and all other boards if anyone ever has an issue with contacting us to write me directly brian@redrockmicro.com. Still open to anyone and everyone

Thanks

Brian

In the spirit of fair play to Brian, Andrew and everyone else at RedRock, I'm happy to report that I received notification yesterday that my mattebox and filter set has shipped! It should be in my hot little hands by Tuesday the 29th.

I'll report again when I've had some time to play around with it.

I share the sentiments expressed by Ted, my fellow New Yorker. I love patronizing the small boutique companies. Certainly, I appreciate that RedRock and others have benefited by responding to market needs with price and performance that many of the big guys chose to ignore.

However, I also hope the the RR customer service effort improves, as it lags behind other similialrly sized vendors. For example, the canned responses to inquiries are not cool, and do not provide a sense that RR is on top of things. Coupled with the fact that any real response comes several days later, if at all, and often without addressing particulars is aggravating. We do get a sense that efforts are being made, as evidenced by responses on the DVX & RR board. The intent is not to discourage the commitment to innovation that has us chomping at the bit.... by all means keep it up!!. However, we're clearly all hoping that the shopping/customer service experience can be as well regarded as the workmanship of the products. Others do it, so we know its within the realm of expectation.

Brian or Andrew, I'd appreciate a detailed sense of status re: #CS7840, Order Confirmation – 440-SO20462 and Order SO19270, and an answer about the MatteBox relay required for my Sony Ex-1.

Thanks in advance,

Chuck

I've been unable to get a response to more than one email asking about compatibility between the RR mattebox and the EX-1.

I ordered the shoulder support rig last, April, I was told 40 days, then 60 days, now it’s to the point were I just stop counting. You guys could butter this all you want but just because you are offering some decent equipment at a decent price does not give a company the right to take ones money and bank it while accumulating interest and repeatedly giving false shipping date. Yes I understand this is a product in development but Mr. Valente I am a buyer not an investor. I would not feel this bitter if my countless emails were answered, or giving a reason why shipping dates were not met four times, instead I had to personally go to different web site to find out what the hell was going so far the only thing that redrock has been efficient in is billing my credit card, I seriously doubt whether I will do business with redrock again. This is absolutely no way to treat a repeat customer…

Hi everyone

Glad we can clear some stuff up here:

Regarding the microMatteBox and the EX-1, it's compatible with the solution described here:

http://www.redrockmicro.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5977

The "canned responses" are just an auto response to say we received your email, they are not designed as *the* response.

Chuck I will PM you regarding your order

uniteus, I understand that, and while we gave (and continue to give) the best dates available, new product releases have uncertainty and therefore the dates are estimates, subject to change. This is only through this period of new product introduction, and once we get through backorders, we should be shipping normally again.

As mentioned before, we keep a regularly updated progress of shipping status at

http://www.redrockmicro.com/micromb_shipping.html

I appreciate all the feedback and clearly we have some work to do.

Thanks

Brian

Thanks Brian,

That EX-1 fix looks easy.
Now all I need is the money, but I'll be buying one eventually. Really liked what I saw at NAB.
