Redrock Lens Gears?

Hi All,

I have to say it is so cool to have this resorce to get help and tips!!!

I have recently bought a Redrock M2 and used it with the PL mount and a set of Ziess primes.

I found that since the circle of ilumination on the cine lenses is smaller than that on still lenses, its a bugger to get rid of the soft edges.

With the cine lenses the HVX jumps out of macro mode when you zoom past the soft edges at least on the wider lenses making it imposible to get a the close focus required by the M2.

So I have now bought a set of Nikons and plan to get the redrock follow focus to complement this.

My question is, the lens gears that come wih the package do not seem to have smoth run all the way arround. while this may work fine for the Nikons as they have a short focus run I also plan to buy the Size D 32 Pitch for use on the HVX alone.

Does this not cause a problem as the focus ring will need to run round a couple of times to cover the complete focus range of the "on camera lens"?

After my first project with the M2 I feel that the look is good for some projects but plan also to use the follow focus with the camera alone as the soft image really provides a special look. i wonder if Redrock can't make a totally clean spinning disk as i would like the shallow DOF but not the film grain effect and promist look provided by the current disk.

I hope that there is someway to work this out as I think Redrock are a great company with a good product.

On a side note I should mention that when prepping the camera package at Panavision here in the UK, we found thet the Spinning dick was not set right to hit the focus marks on the prime lenses (and also on the nikons) so we had to move it. This took about 4 hours of trial and error adjustment (using laser equiptment) and the guys at Panvision did a fantastic job... just so helpfull, can't say enough really!!

Thanks in advance for you advice.

Cheers,

Adam

Adam,

I picked up the Chroziel focus ring for the HVX. It screws together to give a smooth all-around run like you're looking for. It's so low profile and unobtrusive that I leave it on the lens. You can also take a look at Zacuto's setup with built in hard stops. You can set up the lens to not spin past top or tail and screw up your marks. All a question of what floats your boat.

Cavision also has a really good follow focus. But I'm using it with the Nikon lenses, Redrock rings, and the "Cine" gear for the FF sold by Cavision. I don't have the bigger gears for the standard lens though. So, I can't speak to that.

However, I did use this same FF on my DVX with the Cavision ring and I never had a problem not having enough room on the ring. I hope that helps.

Sorry about the quote, but I just couldn't help noticing that "the spinning dick was not set right" :)

In a more serious note, Adam, have you tried a Film blowup of HVX+ M2 footage? What are the results? Also, I notice many people saying HVX+M2 gives you "soft" footage. What does this mean? A big loss in resolution? SD like footage? I really would like to have this cleared out, since I'm planning on either purchasing a M2 or the Brevis...

Hi SPZ,

Ha yeah, Haven't you see Redrock latest bit of kit? :-)

No Blowup to 35mm as i am only using it for music vids. But so far the results are too soft for my liking, I need to play with the unit and see if I can't gat a shapper overall image.

The spinning DISK looks like frosted glass (but is plastic), I guess this is to acheve a film Grain effect? but the downside of this is that the entire image is softend (looks like a heavy promist filter)

I wonder if it possible for Redrock to make a totally clear disk, as many custoners don't want film grain just the shallow DOF.

SD footage is not bad lookiing with the M2.

I am just getting my HVX today and am planning on ordering the M2 adapter on Monday.

I have the following Nikon F-Series SLR manual lenses

1. 50mm (standard) with the following attachable lens rings
- Tristar Closeup No. 1 52mm
- Tristar Closeup No. 2 52mm
- Tristar Closeup No. 4 52mm
- Quantaray Star Filter 52mm

2. 24mm (wider)

3. 80 to 200mm (telephoto – manual zoom)

I am trying to figure out which should I do regarding a follow focus system:

A. Order the Micro Follow Focus indie bundle for $695 from RedRockMicro.

B. Order the Cavision RFF15BDVX100 follow focus (fits 15mm rail support) for $849.95 from B&H. Is this the right model to get? Will it fit the M2 rail?

Thanks in advance for some help on this.

The Cavision is a really good FF. I love Redrock, and I think the M2 is fantastic, but I've heard complaints about the RR FF. At a recent HVX User meeting in LA, Jared commented on how great he thought the Cavision FF was -- if you need some reference. And I agree. It's solid -- no give whatsoever.

The RFF15b is the right model (not sure what the DVX100 part of your part number means). And yes, it will fit on the RR rails. But You'll also want to get the RR lens gears, and the "Cine" gear for the Cavision FF. Feel free to call or e-mail them. Jason has always been extremely helpful whenever I've needed information.

Here's the first picture I took when I got everything together (it was a quicky for friends to see -- I hadn't even gotten my lens hears yet): http://15minuteslatermovie.com/hvxrig.html

Hi guys -

a few responses:

Adam: The cinema lenses circle are indeed smaller than 35mm still lenses. They still work great (we have many customers with Zeiss, Cooke, etc.) - drop me a line with a pic of your setup and we can get you squared away.

Regarding grain, all adapters have grain in the screen to capture the image. A completely clear disk would not render the bokeh correctly. That being said, you should not see any grain in your images. Might be related to setup or lighting as well. there are plenty of examples showing HD with no grain.

On the gear rings for the HVX, the bracket takes about 15 degrees of the circle. going from 0-99 focus is one 360 rotation. In practice, we don't see shots that need to rack focus through the full range. you can always adjust the lens gear.

Regarding comments on Redrock microFollowFocus, we have not heard any complaints from people who use it - we always appreciate any feedback. The play is about the same amount found in other follow focuses. What's most important is that the follow focus is completely geared, meaning you can hit repeatable focus marks.

Thanks

Brian
