red "x" on display

im sure this has been asked before, but i have a red "x" that keeps showing up on my display at the top left corner. it seems to come and go at random. I have found nothing in the manual... a little help please? :)

(this is not the "no tape" display, this is a circle with an X in it)

ok, this error is a warning that the cylindar heads are dirty.... how do i go about correcting this?? :-/
