Red X of death oddity

Okay, so I cleaned my heads last month following Barry_S's instructions. All was right with the world. Until today when the Red X of Death reappeared after having put maybe 90 minutes on the clean heads. I check playback with the tape still in the DVX and, sure enough, drop outs, blue flashes, etc. However, when I pop the tape into my digitizing deck (a cheap Panny camcorder), the tape plays fine. Any ideas on what's going on? Did I do a poor cleaning job (I didn't do the rubber parts as I didn't have that cleaner)? I'm using new tape stock (probably 18 months old, if that matters) and only use MQ tapes.

Thanks,

Fox

Hey
Are you taking the camera from inside to outside when you are experiencing this? I had the same problem last week.. exact symptoms. Usually I wait about 15 minutes after the camera has been exposed to the cold weather before taping anything. I didnt wait 15 minutes and so I experienced the problem until I turned it off and let it adjust.

I had taken it outside this morning to shoot the dusting of snow we got, yes. Thought it might be that, but it did keep popping up even a few hours later. I'll see how it goes tomorrow. Thanks.

Have you tried fast forwarding and rewinding a brand new tape. You need to FF it all the way to the end then REW it all the way back to the beginning. That should clear out any debris that may be linguring around.

Hope this helps.
