RED Simplifies Camera Lineup & Reduces Prices

There hasn't been a better time to get a Red camera. With Ipp2, the 3 sensor offerings are all excellent. I own the Helium and am going to the Monstro VV one very soon, but the big Hit right now is the Gemini sensor which is wowing professionals from all over the pond. I love the Helium, and one cannot believe the images that come out of that camera. Going Full Frame because I do both Stills and Video so its the best of both worlds for me.

I'm here thinking, $3K...more like $2K, lol.

Love RED and their cameras are amazing, but those prices are still pretty ridiculous, IMO...but I'm not their target consumer and irrelevant.

(And I think that about anyone who has cameras for sale for that much...including ARRI.)

If one doesn't fall for the "upgrade" bug, which is a strong disease that affects most red owners, a Red camera, even the good, old Red One (MX), still produces professionally relevant and current 4K pictures. Thats a camera that is 10 years old! Many tv commercials (well paid ones) are still being regularly shot here with Epic MX's (2011) so I figure an 8K Red will get you a good 10 year mileage, at least, if you are looking for a long term investment. For an indie, guerrilla, low light prone shooter, the 5K Gemini is arguably on par to an Alexa mini but with better low light and newer sensor tech. I'm obviously biased, but I think that certainly now more than ever, if one has the budget, its the time to enter the Red ecosystem.

Or should the title be,

RED abandons making cameras below 20k?

With the Scarlet-W and Raven still current, I don't think that is accurate.

The unification, in my eyes, is an affair to simplify the Epic-W/Epic-MG/Weapon/Carbon mess.

RED cameras are still way too clunky for me, but wasn't the Helium 8K S35 price just cut in half to $24000? The price cut now together with RED's top performance tier makes it kind of an OK deal in that eco system.

Personally (and I have no idea how the internals work)

But I would of thought they would of produced a 4th lower tiered version, but with the Raven sensor. So giving students, and prosumers a entry into the Red playground.

It's a shame they never did...maybe one day.

They do have the Hydrogen coming out, but it's not the same.

"Robin" ;)

I'm super thrilled that RED continues to break new ground and dial in their pricing so more people can own. Personally though, I sold mine about 5 years ago and have not looked back. At the same time, we have still shot most of our videos with the newest RED cams and they turn out fantastic.

The only difference is, the project pays for it....not us. For our business, it just makes way too much sense to rent and pass the cost onto the project. They turn out just as good...except you don't need to spend $30K (ish)...plus insurance....plus future upgrades....plus the responsibility of something failing....ect.

Yup, I worked on a feature film last year shot on a RED ONE (and I know of at least one other feature film in my small circle of friends which also got shot on another different RED ONE that year), and this year so far I've worked on two more feature films shot on a RED ONE.

They actually did the opposite...they started selling the Raven again in their own store in the kit that only Apple was selling at one point.

B&H and others still have bodies and/or various kits.
