Red Scarlet Announcement Info

I've never been a Red hater, just have not been able to afford one. Red changed the game last night for under 15k i'm gonna be a Red user. That is sweet!

Love this!

I was joking with a friend.. since someone said the color of the camera is battle ship grey... I told him they should have used it on the upcoming movie Battleship...

I know I'm going to get beat up for this... slow net out here in the boonies... or its the cold weather I'm back to dial up speed instead of 3g... so it'll take me forever to go through 20 pages of posts... but someone posted last night
that if purchased the 14.5k package piece by piece is... 13.8k... or did he miss something... and yes I tried to get on Red.com... way to slow of net... just saw a spinning ball...

Hi Kholi. How many are you buying?

I was on the verge of putting down a Deposit last night for the company..

Then I realized that I actually shoot and have enough friends and supporters with Epic's and M-X's and F3's and Alexas and 5D's; no need to buy. But definitely time to move onto the next feature.

Does this mean you aren't buying one? Even after the long long years of being a massive advocate?

I think he missed something...

Strange, unless i'm missing something too.... I get $13715 if I add up the package individually.

Interesting… I didn't order the 'package', I ordered individual bit's and pieces that I needed and the PL mount. I wonder what it is?

G.

What do you absolutely need to order from red to get the camera working? Everything in the $14k or can things like the 5 inch touch lcd be replaced with an external lcd? Just trying to gauge pricing to get a working camera cheaper than $14.5k

Cheers!

My Question, how do you see the market shaping as from now?
I think Red will sell a lot of Scarlets. I think Canon 300 will sell less, but do okay. And I think the F3 sales, and price will drop off next year.

I also think this breathes life into the already breathing AF100, FS100, and DSLR shooters. A 3k Scarlet for $6k could have put a serious dent into some of those sales. But now that it's out of that range, people will budget for these cameras, and realize again how great of picture quality they do have.

Having said that, I think this opens the door for someone like Panasonic to produce the camera Barry and a few others were telling Panny to make. That is to basically put a large chip (m4/3) into an HPX170 (or HVX250), filling the void left by a potential $6k Scarlet. I still think there's plenty of life for 1080p, and while HDRx and faster frame rates are nice, having a fixed lens camcorder so many of us are used to running with (HPX170, HVX200, DVX100, plus all the Canons, Sony's, etc. over the years) that has the one missing link: a larger chip, would be a huge seller around the $5-6k price point.

After giving it more thought, it's almost a definite no for me. Having found out about the sensor crop if you shoot below 4k on the Scarlet, I just can't do it. I can't be handling 4k files all the time and although RAW is what I would really be buying the camera for, having to shoot in lower resolutions with a FOV crop is just out of the question. Shooting in 2k would give me a 50% crop on my lens. That's worse then my AF100. That's also what you need to deal with if you want slow-mo.

It's unfortunate, but that one single aspect of the camera alone pushes me out of the game for now. Until I can handle 4k footage with confidence...I'll have to wait. Unless I could work out a proper workflow that wouldn't totally bring my computers to their knees, then I will consider it again. Proxies are obvious but I'll need to look into things more before I'll go for it.

Great camera, great price...it's a winner for sure. :)

This is really funny, because after all the dust settled that's the conclusion I came up with.

Panasonic's the only one that's gotten SUPER close to doing the improbable. The only thing is that darned 4/3" sensor, man.

But how do you do it without sending customers to your competitors for lenses???
