Red Scarlet Announcement Info

Of all the exciting uses for motion stills... I think landscape is about the least useful. That image could easily be from a Nikon D7000, in fact, the D7000 would look better... I'm sure of it.

Agree. The REDhype has gone beyond ridiculous and all the swipes at canon set a stark contrast to the pride they have for their $2000 titanium Canon / Epic mount.

Strangely Canon has announced some new camera at the very same day, or 1 day later?.....supposedly a 35mm equivalent or such....
I will watch with curiosity but I dont hold my breath for something that shakes the markets. Its been 4 years since Scarlet was announced as 3K for 3k$.
I am glad I did not wait :-D

It's a HDR image. I shoot architecture with a 5dmk2. Trust me, i could do much better with a 5dmk2 than this example. Especially if I stitched the image together.4306264677_eb25dccf01_b.jpgThis is an image I shot at 1250 iso from a monopod using with 3 exposures and blending with HDR. Here's another. 4021425756_d981c726f8_z.jpgA $2500 camera vrs a $58,000 camera. I know HDR when I see it and this Epic image is HDR.

Yeah, I thought it looked like HDR too. Looks nice for sure, but a lot of the tone and contrast looked like HDR to me.

The point is not that an Epic is a practical replacement for far less expensive digital stills cameras. It is primarily a motion picture camera that shoots top of the line stills quality images. It is the first and so far only digital motion camera with high enough image quality to be accepted by Getty Images for stills submissions.

Nikon D3 might produce a comparable quality image, but not a D7000. D7000 doesn't have the DR of an Epic even without HDRx. That Vegas shot is not multi-exposure HDR, it is single exposure. HDR was not needed.

I was there at 9am the first day of NAB in line at the RED tent the year they announced 3k for 3k (was that 08 or 09?). You know the only thing I think they were able to succeed in doing that day? Turning all filmmaking forums into a place for tech nerds to get off. I hope once all those people hear the announcement on the 3rd and are dissapointed, which they will be, will either leave or just sit back and talk about filmmaking again.

This place was different before then.

agreed! But arent both forums run by the same peeps? All I can say is: the hype has been offending but most offending I find postings like this:

A slightly ironic thought: Epic is primarily a cinema (dare I say it >>) video camera... that shoots photos also. Canon (and many other) DSLRs are primarily photo cameras... that shoots video also. Jim, you're closer to a DSLR then you'd like to think (in reverse-principle at least). Lol...

Jannard said HDRx was not used but he said it was "stitched and graded." He also never said it was a single exposure. "A lot of this was Peter's techniques. It isn't for me to spill the beans."

Just looking at that picture you can tell it was manipulated in post. I actually don't really like it. It looks like those unnatural, overly-HDR'ed shots. Some of the tones just look weird, making the objects look like they were photoshopped into the picture.

"We also shot a Phase One 80MP back stitched. EPIC won." -- A Phase One is designed and used for other purposes. Picking one scenario to "beat it" seems superficial. Why don't they pit the Epic against a Phone One in a studio under low ISO on a product shot and see who wins then? Jannard seems to have an obsession with winning. He's starting to sound like Charlie Sheen.

I'm not sure how correct the DoXmark tests are... but the D7000 is very highly rated for DR... 14 stops... that beats Epic, hands down.

Jim said they didn't use HDRx. They may still have used the old-fashioned HDR with multiple exposures.

Might be a good idea for people to do a minute or two of research before taking a dump right in the middle of the party... and then realizing that it was the wrong party.
Funny how many people hate on all this. It's a great picture by a professional photographer. I wouldt highly doubt if anyone got the opportunity to work next to him and the EPIC they would turn it down, even though we like to throw stones on the internet.

HDR (and HDRx) are dependent on two or more combined exposures. This was NOT the case here. The shot was graded, just like you would grade motion, from single exposure stitched EPIC frames.

Alchemy is a clever and simple tool. It does not make wild effects.

Peter owns the shots and is not likely to every give up any of his original files... any more than Peter Jackson would let us post original R3Ds from The Hobbit.

Peter is the one who said "EPIC wins."

The problem with the Phase shots was resolution in the corners and blooming of the lights. Plus, the Phase sensor is noisy at higher ISOs so he had to shoot ISO 100 and long exposures... which gives the classic long streaking cars look which didn't fit this shot.

I'm not suggesting anything other than this is what it is. Another use for EPIC as a DSMC.

That post was #107! Jannard didn't explain these extra details in his first few post. We made comments based on the previous posts.

It's also clear the picture was manipulated and processed. There's nothing wrong with that, but at that point it's not representative of what you get straight out of the camera.

Whether a picture is great or not is subjective. It's perfectly valid for someone else to not like it and not have that be "throwing stones." Personally, I don't like that shot. Again, that's not a dig against Peter Lik, that's just a personal preference on a particular photo or a particular style.

At ISO 800 it is not, and that's measuring stills DR not video--which is considerably less.
I was talking about stills when mentioning the D7000... I thought that Nikon sensor didn't really lose much DR until you hit 1600...

It has around 1stop to lose on the Epic anyway. 800iso is not gonna lose you that much (of course, i'm talking RAW here)

+1

That is the amazing part!
