Red Scarlet Announcement Info

I think we should all applaud Red and declare that we're joining their back order list -- for the sole and exclusive purpose of pushing Panasonic, Sony, Canon, JVC, and whoever else to compete -- to offer better products at better prices.

The Sony F3 was a response to the Red One, and to a limited extent the Panasonic AF-100 was, in part, a response to the then-anticipated Scarlet.

If this new Scarlet turns in to the sensation of the online forums -- we may end up with better, cheaper cameras with superior codecs released to compete with Red.

The exact point I was trying to make...

Innovation is great, we all win But it's a camera not a way of life or a religion.

I'm out. I'll see you all after the 3rd.

I hope once all those people hear the announcement on the 3rd and are dissapointed, which they will be, will either leave or just sit back and talk about filmmaking again.

Or they will all start talking about what it should have had.

This is a HUGE tease. A Red Light Field (Lytros) camera??? Selectable focus in post. Holy.... wow.

When I first heard about the Lytro I thought about the technologies application in video and cinema. The next thing I thought was that Red would probably start trying to get something like this out – purely because they specialize in making cinema cameras that encourage as many adjustments in post as possible. Now I'm starting to think about how Red is trying to steal other companies thunder: Canon's announcement, now Lytro. Could it be coincidental that Red posted a few days after orders opened for the Lytro and an article appeared on Engadget - and Jim even mentions not to tell "Gizmodo or Engadget"? I think not - trying to get themselves an article about some possibly non-existent high resolution Lytro like Red camera. Come on - get a real PR person.

Just like when red pre announced specs and goals, and others began to build cameras similar or so people said. It's fair game for red to jump on the tech that has been around for a bit and who knows how long before we knew about it. Now that is not to say that others weren't working on similar things despite red, or that red was working on this despite lytro. I'm fairly certain it's a similar concept with a different approach for achieving different goals. If there is issues I'm sure the patents will sort that out....

far too many assumptions and reading into what people mean with very little knowledge to go on. I couldn't care less who pioneered it, I want the best produced most affordable product, not a crummy first gen product and refuse anything else because of some weird unfounded loyalty.

Red seems to get a lot undue criticism and conspiracy theories from some people... don't really get it, I have more pressing things to be concerned about, like who shot roger rabbit?

keep on shooting!

p.s. considering red's back orders and the numbers of camera's they have sold already I don't think they need a PR person I think they are doing just fine, in fact that is part of the reason they can keep their costs down as their overhead does not include a massive marketing budget... but there I could just be jumping to conclusions. Every negative post is marketing for them so their PR method is great for every person that buys the misinformed rant posts of doubters there is a person who goes on the site does their own research, rents tests the camera's, and finds out what they can actually do as opposed to what people are telling them they can or can't do.

I think JVC will be the first, if canon doesn't beat them. I'm not expecting red to make an affordable 4k camera but I could be wrong. though from what I last saw JVC didn't think it would be released until some time in the new year at least, but I could be wrong on that too.

I'm interested to see when the canons will be available as well, I'm wondering even if they are available to buy right away how long it will take to get one. Though there is a lot of great cameras coming out it may take a bit for them to hit mass distribution across the market.

I think JVC is tempted to wait and play it safe because they got a lot of flak when they introduced their consumer high definition camera in 2003. But what JVC needs to do is to introduce the 4K camera as soon as possible and tell the critics that the camera rocks and they don't care what anyone thinks.

Part of the problem with JVC's 2003 HDV camcorder -- and with the HDV spec as it stood then -- was the lack of 24p. I hope tehy don't make that mistake again, although more than likely, they'll do something dumb, like try to shoehorn 4K (quad HD, actually) into a 1/2- or 2/3-inch sensor. And having to stripe data across multiple cards is troubling.

4K Scarlet for less than 10K seems illogical from a business standpoint.

Many of us are hoping for a 4K Scarlet for less than $10,000 so that we can use our 35mm lenses with it. The DSLR market and the 35mm adapter market, cater to indie filmmakers that want 35mm DOF. Jannard has stated that he "knows what filmmakers want", so I am assuming that he knows that the 35mm brain would be popular. For RED to produce a camera that shoots 4K, and costs less than 10K, and has basic accessories (Battery, Case, Audio Inputs, lens mount) would absolutely blow the original $25,000 RED ONE completely out of the marketplace. Essentially, they will have to retire the RED ONE, or drop the price even lower than 10K, which seems like a radical shift. Is there anyone out there that thinks, that the RED ONE is going to be discontinued? What will happen to the price of all of those used Red Ones if there is a 35mm Scarlet for 10K? How much can you sell that 10 pound beast for, when there is a 4 pound alternative, with better features? A 4K Scarlet for less than $10,000 would mean that RED would essentially be dropping an Atomic Bomb on every single RED ONE owner. For this reason, I predict that Scarlet will be a 2/3 sensor / 3K / 60fps capable. Just a step down from the RED ONE, but inexpensive enough to sell thousands of units. The only thing wrong with my prediction, is that, there are RED lenses on sale right now, that are 35mm sized, but say that they are compatible with Scarlet. See for yourself.

Any thoughts?

RED make great camera's and I intend to purchase one, but that guy talks so much crap and has shot himself in the foot more times than a blind drunk soldier...

on REDUser he says that 4k is the only way to go and that 1080p and everything in between is just not good enough, and if he knows what the market wants, then, he knows that 2/3 is good, but not good enough. There go, killing off one of there line of cameras (the red one), unless he delivers a Scarlett that will contradict everything he says. They genuinely think there Scarlett will be a threat to whatever Canon releases, and this is where he is being so arrogant, canon will sell more cameras, simply because they are canon. I am still going to buy the RED, but damn what a bad representitive for a company.

He wanted a digital replacement for 35mm film, 1080 was not enough in his eye's and I agree. All his posts were in reference to the movie industry and the big guys only pushing 1080 while saying to scan film at 4k for best results. 3k is just fine for a 16mm replacement as Arri suggests to scan it at that resolution, so is 2/3" sensors. People need to think about the many other shooters and their needs out there. And how much a fully electronic 8x zoom lens with programmable rack focus and zoom would cost for a 35mm camera with constant f2.8 through the whole zoom range(so add on a focus motor, zoom motor to the 35 lens cost... don't even get me started on weight and size). Heck even compare 35mm cine lenses to 16mm and s16mm lenses, or the mini primes, or how much light you will need to get a deep depth of field in certain situations, every format has it's strengths and shortcomings that either compliment or contrast different work flows, it's the very reason they exist in the first place.

different cameras for different markets.... 2/3" is here to stay!

edit: the lenses have had the compatible with scarlet for a while, but then there has always been the interchangeable scarlet with Nikon cannon and pl lens mount options... plus there is the possibility that it's just a mistake though I doubt that... no point in guessing or reading into things at this point might as well wait and see what they have to offer not that far off now.

Thery already showed us 2/3 3k 120fps footage if im not mistaken, so i believe scarlet will be at least that, hopefully with interchangeable lenses.

Really, 60 fps? It was previously specced to run at up 120 fps continuously, with a 150-fps burst.

Good point, I had forgotten about that. I wonder if they are doing 120 fps with HDRX at the same time. hmmmm.

Either way, 120fps / 3k / 2/3 inch / $8000 Fixed Lens Package, for the money sounds like a better value than the RED ONE to me. If that same package is $5000, then WOW! Is RED just going to dump the RED ONE overboard? If I was a RED ONE owner, I would be really worried about the value of my gear dropping like a stone.

It's all speculation at this point, but I hope that shooting RAW gets a lot cheaper on November 3, 2011. Whether it's 2/3 or 35mm.

If I was a Red one owner I would trade in at full value for an Epic :)
