RED Roadmap

Though we could quibble about specific numbers, it doesnt really matter. The DR advantage in the newer chips is a huge deal and really makes a difference - and like you said, you can't add it back in post. The only thing you could get away with would be emulating a grade, when all those stops of DR get pushed together to create a pleasing image. Thats really what i was getting at.

And the improvements in DR recently i's actually one of the reasons I'm so excited to see Dragon from RED...the M-X in Epics is almost a couple of years old now - which can really show with technology improving at such a rapid rate.

I also like the feel of the Alexa better. Epic is too glossy and prefer it at 4k or 2k than ultra clean 5K. what's good about Epic though is that perhps its native DR might increase via sensor upgrade, something that other companies would translate to "buy our newer camera"

Well, the EPIC isn't intended to provide deliverables at 5K. It is intended for debayer to 4K deliverable.

And I agree...apparently to get 120fps on an Alexa now, one must purchase the SUP, then a "license" to shoot 120fps, then a new media card that supports the data rate. Oof.

I dont think so. One of the entire reasons for their existence was to push 4K into the mainstream. It's expected that other companies would offer their own 4K cameras, even after years of saying 4K was unnecessary and superfluous, and that 1080p was more than enough. And of course, not everything that is '4K' will be equal, just as not everything that is HD is on the same playing field.

Well its Sony that says that 4k is not equal because they introduced their F65 4k camera with the 8k 20 megapixel sensor that boasts the worlds highest resolution.
Critics argue that without a practical method of compression the Sony does not count but it is only a matter of time before Sony fixes that problem.

Well, it's going to be competition. Everyone will be trying to put the best image on the screen. And they will probably all have unique ways of doing that. Sony has opened their hand, a bit. Clearly they've been paying attention, especially regarding price.

I'd love to see a quote from ANY company saying that.

It seems clear to most that RED sacrificed DR and noise in exchange for pixels (with the M).... at the time, I think sony et al, were right to build really good 1080p digital cams, rather than fairly good 4K cameras (albeit at a great price). The technology has now caught up and the big guns are ready to offer pixels AND top performance. In my eyes, they got it right. The MX and even Epic ... in some respects... are now, dare I say, obsolete.

ps - i'm no RED hater... i'm ready for a Scarlet... I just don't like the way some people perceive RED as being so superior

Well the problem with Jim Jannard is that he refuses to invest in researching radical new technology.

What! I'm not the biggest red fan ever, but credit where credit s due. They have practically alien technology. I love the camera, just not the attitude. I will buy an epic someday when the bugs are worked out. :)

There I said it.... mmm coolaid.....

i talked with Jim about getting rid of the square pixels on his camera and he thought it was cheaper to argue with me rather than fix the problem.

This sums up my attitude towards RED exactly, they make great products but geez could they off the steroid injected hype machine for 10 minutes and just focus on the task at hand.

On second thought... this thread is awesome! I hope it goes on forever.

Honestly - I don't know WTF you are trying to say here - but to claim that Alexa looks more organic than Epic is just ignorant. Have you shot with the epic? Using the latest firmware, and taking the footage into Redcine-X and done a one-light? The thing has as much if not more "Mojo" than alexa. If you really look, open your eyes, and shoot them side by side like I have, you will realize this is simply not true. Epic has the "mojo" - this Alexa-Lover stuff is just basically repeating verbatim what marketing wants you to believe. The alexa is a great camera, but it is really nothing special when shot side by side with epic. it's not what "comes up on the monitor" it's what you get when you put it in a color suite with proper colorimetry. What you see on the monitor is a down sampled reference image. You can only really use the histogram, meters, and your own experience to know what you are getting out of the Epic. The idea of monitoring as an exposure tool is only part of the picture on real digital cinematography cameras (alexa included).

To work with alexa or something like an F3 in Log Mode, you should be using an on-set grading and colorimetry tool like Technicolor DP Lights or TrueLight OnSet. These tools are just as valid with Epic, but you actually have better exposure tools built into the epic from the factory.

But, please, keep thinking this way, less competition for me in the marketplace is good.

Timur, how many times am I supposed to remind you that you're not allowed to have a professional opinion! :)

Without that hype, most people would walk away from Red and take their business elsewhere (some already have), simply because Sony is actually keeping their word and not making excuses about changing dates and attitudes. Even with the Tsunami, they adapted. And so far, unlike Red, when Sony gives a delivery date, they generally keep to it. So, thank you Red for shaking up the industry, now try adapting some of the industries better practices. No shame in that.

That's absolutely hilarious! :cheesy: This guy and his mom's Red always (or mostly always) crack me up. Seriously, you need comedy like this when the Red fan-boys get to you.

I love that they are redusers though, and just acknowledge that its just a camera, not a religion.
