RED Ranger For Sale / No Longer Just A Rental Item

Run&Gun

Veteran
Just received an email from my dealer and apparently the RED Ranger is now for sale with your choice of Monster 8K VV, Helium 8K s35 or Gemini 5K s35 sensor.

I reached out to confirm that Rangers are now "for sale"(not in the market, just checking) and not just rentals and the reply was YES and that it's a cluster f regarding RED right now.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the Ranger? I don't know why I ask; at this point there's not a lot of point to staying up-to-date with the bajillion models of Reds out there. Maybe it'd make me sound smart when talking to other Red owners, but I'm not sure that's the kind of intelligence I seek in life.

I want to see the Red Xenomorph for sale but in a more shoulder mount friendly form factor. Just, keep the integration going but change the shape.

The monstro is still rental house only, i believe.

Cool to see a Red package come base with more features such as three SDIs and XLR input, but why is Red the only high end camera system out there that still doesn't have built-in NDs? Sony, Panasonic, Blackmagic, Arri, and Canon all have built-in NDs.

Thanks for spelling it out.

AlevIII is the only Arri sensor I've heard about and is by far the most popular, so that really narrows things down as opposed to the many combinations that Red commonly sells. Then a lot of the other models of bodies aren't that common with Arri, so it really comes down to XT (the SXT is basically the same thing with a built-in transmitter), Mini, LF, and 65, which means four primary models and one primary sensor.

I didn't know of the Arri D-20 or D-21 before. Interesting.

I'll admit I'm more researched on Arri so perhaps that's one reason it feels more simplified, but I do still feel Red has more common versions to choose from and they certainly update their sensors and bodies more often than Arri does.

Arri has the licensing features and Red had the Scarlet/Epic thing.

Red branding is confusing and the sensors change the look and behavior.... but Steve Yedlin says it’s all data ;)

Just like with most camera companies, it's easier to understand their business/timeline if you've followed them from the beginning.

Anyone just learning about RED today and looking to purchase one of their cameras would be super confused, but it's not that confusing if you've been around watching/learning (especially when they finally release the details rather than teasing developments).

10+ different Alexas with the same sensor but minor software/hardware upgrades can be just as confusing. Or 6 different Blackmagic URSAs (including the Minis). Or what seems like an endless amount of Sony mirrorless'.

Just one of those things that takes place in many industries...you really need to be around and in touch to experience it all because it's later difficult to go back and try to piece things together based on the various models, updates and upgrades, discontinuations, business decisions (trade-ins, limited time offers), etc.

According to RED/Jarred, IF an owner is sub-ing their DSMC2 Monstro to a rental house, then they can trade-in/upgrade to a Monstro Ranger.

Also, the thread on REDUser shows why people think the users are a cult/fanboys, etc. Some tool posted not once, but twice when the new page for it was not up and running SIX minutes after Jarred said it would be and then again FIFTEEN minutes after. Wow is about all you can say.

I don't think it's that confusing.
Today there are three models in modular format. Gemini (S35 5K), Helium (S35 8K) and Monstro (FF 8K).
They are now available in Ranger format. Which is much more robust and complete as a package.

Personally, I have never been a fan of the look or the marketing. But I think they have simplified things into a much more coherent strategy.
3 base models. Modular or integrated. You chose.

Everything else is history. What's the big deal ?

I think this is great news. The Ranger body is precisely the kind of body I’d want to build a DSMC2 camera into. It’s a great size for a working camera, small (but not so small that you’ll struggle to rig it), and pretty lightweight.

And on top of having the I/O that an A-camera needs, the unibody construction means there’s less to go wrong.

I think this a good thing. Gemini is a great sensor.

As a Monstro owner, and a previous Helium owner, I don’t feel this affects me in any way. Its a different form factor with many built in features that were available in modules. I very much like the modularity approach of the dsmc concept so this camera is not for me. Saying that, I can see how this is a preferred form factor for many.

All in all , different camera approaches, but ultimately , the same image quality and features through both these approaches. Choices are good and its a win win for everyone.

Let's be honest, there are really only two Alexa's, the mini, and now the mini LF ; )

That's related to the fact that it's also the ONLY Arri sensor...

EVERYONE updates their sensors more often than Arri does. Every one of Arri's current sensors is basically the same; they use the same pixel and I/O design, just more or less of it. That's part of how Arri maintains such a consistent look in spite of how many different variations there are in Arri cameras.

It goes to show how much Arri got right out the gate to still be so dominant with a ten year old sensor.
